J.J. Spaun has surged back into form at the FedEx St. Jude Championship this week.

Spaun has been fairly quiet on the PGA Tour since winning the US Open in June but he has a great chance to win the FedEx St. Jude Championship after rounds of 68, 66 and 65 at TPC Southwind this week catapulted him into contention.

The 34-year-old American will jump inside the top five of the FedEx Cup standings if he remains inside the top three in Memphis this week, and he will definitely be on the US Ryder Cup team at Bethpage Black as well.

Spaun’s unbelievable win at the US Open has seen him reach a whole new level in the game.

Spaun said that his US Open win led to him receiving more respect from his fellow PGA Tour players.

However, there is no let-up on the PGA Tour. You win one week and you’re yesterday’s man the next week.

Spaun’s best finish since his US Open win was a tie for 14th at the Travelers Championship, but he seems to be back to somewhere near his best this week.

He opened up on something that he has really been struggling with over the past few weeks.

A reporter asked Spaun what has changed about his iron play this week.

Spaun said: It was awful. It started at the Scottish. I don’t know if it was the turf over there or the wind direction of the range all week there. It just got in my head and I started thinking about my swing, and I didn’t have my best stuff there or at The Open.

Then we didn’t get back home until the following week, so then all week last week I was just grinding trying to find it and didn’t make any progress literally until maybe yesterday. But I got here Monday, worked with my coach. We were kind of trying different things. It wasn’t really how I wanted it to be.

But last night we found a nice piece in my swing that I was missing and ran with that today, and it felt really good. The irons were a lot better today.

I kind of had to figure out what I was doing over there that felt different than what I would do here, and I felt like because the turf is so tight there and dry, like my angle of attack was getting more steep just to compress it more, whereas out here it’s more lush, softer, easier to sweep it. I’m a pretty shallow guy. I try to be. That kind of threw me off throughout the entire swing.

We were just trying to figure out how to find the face again, and we managed pretty well this week.

Spaun probably needs to post another round of 65 or better to have any chance of winning the FedEx St. Jude Championship on Sunday, but at least his game is where it needs to be to do exactly that.

J.J. Spaun’s stats at the FedEx St. Jude Championship

Spaun’s game has returned to the levels he displayed at Oakmont back in June.

Here are his stats from the first three rounds of the FedEx St. Jude Championship:

StatsSpaun’s rank
Strokes gained off the tee8th
Strokes gained approach5th
Strokes gained around the greens15th
Strokes gained putting47th
Strokes gained total5th

Spaun’s iron play has been superb at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, and he has driven the ball really well too.

More of that will be required on Sunday if he is to secure his second win of the 2025 PGA Tour season.
