It’s just not happening for Rory McIlroy right now on the PGA Tour.
As we hurtle towards The Masters in April, McIlroy seems out of touch and well from his very best on American soil. This, despite a promising start over in the Middle East where he picked up a win and a second placed finish in consecutive tournaments.
With pressure now growing on McIlroy when it comes to getting into tip-top shape for Augusta, suggestions are being flung around now in the golfing world.
And after McIlroy himself played a part in Scottie Scheffler changing putters and getting back to dominance, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Spence believes McIlroy should consider some changes as well.
Rory McIlroy told to consider off-course changes to improve
Speaking on the latest episode of Sky’s Golf podcast, Spence hinted that McIlroy should perhaps consider changing some of his backroom team.
“I’m not his coach, he’s been with the same team, they’ve been making the same mistakes. It’s a sign of madness isn’t it, expecting a different result from the same actions. You’ve got to change something, he’s got to change something,” Spence said on the Sky Sports Golf Podcast.
“He’s such a good player but even within his streakiness, he can finish fifth, 10th, and keep those results going along. He can still do that. But he’s always been up and down and you just wait for Rory to get back on the surfboard and back on the wave. When he does that, he’s near unbeatable. So I don’t worry about Rory.”
As usual, McIlroy will go into The Masters as one of the heavy favourites to win the whole tournament.
However, equally as important is the added pressure he feels when the tournament comes around.
The Masters remains the only major McIlroy has yet to win and with each passing year, it seems to become a bigger monkey on his back.
On this form, McIlroy will be waiting another year at least.
