Jon Rahm has issued his reaction to the news that LIV Golf have ended their fight to try and secure world ranking points for their players.

Of course, the lack of world ranking points appeared to be one of the key factors which stopped some players making the jump away from the PGA Tour and DP World Tour.

While it is no concern for the likes of Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau, many players have to think about how exactly they are going to qualify for major championships.

However, with LIV tournaments contested over 54 holes and there being no cut, the breakaway tour has never been able to reach an agreement whereby their players do receive world ranking points.

And the situation came to a head this week, with Greg Norman confirming that LIV will no longer seek to find a way to secure ranking points for their players.

It is a blow for the tour. But it seems that many of their players are remaining defiant about the situation. Speaking in his press conference ahead of this week’s event Hong Kong, Jon Rahm suggested that the decision is not going to stop the momentum of the Saudi-backed tour.

“I haven’t talked to anybody about this or seen any responses. But I’m going to be honest, I didn’t know they were still trying to get world ranking points. But the one thing I can say is I’m going to go back to what I said two years ago in the DP World Tour championship. I didn’t think it was a good system back then. And if anything, the more times that goes on, the more it proves to be wrong,” he said.

“For anyone in this world to think Jaco doesn’t deserve to be in the top 10 or doesn’t know he’s a top 10 player in the world, I don’t know what game you’re watching.”

Players knew the risk

Few golf fans appear to pay much attention to the world golf rankings. Of course, it is great to see who the world number one is, particularly if a player ascends to that level after a sustained period of success.

And obviously, the fields at certain tournaments are largely decided by the world rankings. So it will be a shame if certain names are not involved because their form for LIV is not recognised.

However, the players who made the move would have had an idea that this situation may not end well. And it is not like they have not been financially compensated for their decision.

Having said that, the only thing that seems safe to say about the golfing landscape these days is that ruling anything out is only likely to make you look foolish further down the line.
