The Open at Royal Troon gets underway in a few weeks time and some of the world’s most popular YouTube golfers have been giving it a bash.

The Open represents a chance for some anyone to have a go, as regional and then national qualifying takes place up and down the UK.

This year, there was more interest than ever as a host of top YouTube stars from the UK had a go at making it to Royal Troon.

The likes of Rick Shiels, Peter Finch, Andy Carter and James Robinson were among those trying to get through and it’s safe to say there was mixed results.

Rick Shiels and Peter Finch seriously struggle in Open qualifying

For Finch especially, The Open qualifying has been a major part of his year in the YouTube world.

Finch has made videos and charted his progress throughout 2024 and he was in fine form going into his round at Hesketh Golf Club.

However, things quickly unravelled for Finch and he ended up carding a pretty woeful 12 over par to finish some way down the leaderboard.

For Shiels, who had only entered late in the day and didn’t quite put the time in that Finch had, the result was similar, as he carded an 81 to shoot nine over at Caldy.

We expect Shiels will reveal all about his round on his podcast next week.

For some other names, the results were a tad more impressive.

Andy Carter – who is well known for playing with Finch and Shiels over the years – carded a one over par at Hesketh.

Matthew Fryer, who has so often appeared with Shiels and Finch over the years, carded a five over par himself to make it a miserable day for the YouTube stars.

100 qualifiers will now go to national qualifying and compete for a spot among the big boys at Troon in a few weeks’ time.
