Michael Block isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but nobody can argue with his track record of qualifying for some of the biggest tournaments in world golf.

Block has played in nine major championships in total – not too bad for a teaching pro!

Seven of those have been at the PGA Championship, whilst he has played in two US Open championships.

He has made only one cut in those nine tournaments.

Block, 48, came to the public’s attention at the PGA Championship in 2023 when he finished in a tie for 15th at Oak Hill.

The teaching pro was paired with Rory McIlroy in the final round, after shooting three rounds of level-par 70.

It was an incredible day for Block, who made a hole-in-one on the 15th hole at Oak Hill during his final round, after ‘slam dunking’ the ball straight into the cup.

Block said he found it hard to read about himself online after the PGA Championship.

And he has received plenty of criticism since then for his perceived over-confidence.

However, the way in which he backs himself is probably the reason why he has qualified to play in so many major championships.

Back in 2007, The US Open was held at Oakmont – the venue for this year’s event.

The Henry Fownes-designed layout in Pennsylvania is widely regarded to be one of the most challenging golf courses in the world.

Angel Cabrera won his first major championship at Oakmont in 2007, after finishing at five-over-par for the week.

So the golf course was obviously playing incredibly difficult 18 years ago.

So how did Block get on?

Well, it certainly wasn’t his best week, as he posted rounds of 79 and 77 to end up at 16-over-par.

The 48-year-old missed the cut by six shots, with the only highlight of his week coming at the short par four 14th hole on day one.

Block qualified for the US Open again in 2018 at Shinnecock Hills, but suffered the same fate again.

He shot rounds of 85 and 78 to finish second-to-last that week.

McIlroy spoke about the head pro at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in California, after being paired with him at the PGA Championship in 2023.

And the Northern Irishman lifted the lid on what Block told his caddie Harry Diamond about his short game.

McIlroy said, “He was down in the crowd, blind shot, and I’m like, ‘There’s no way this guy is getting this thing up and down, like no way. And he hits this shot that lands in the rough between the bunker and the green and trundles down to 6 feet.

“This just speaks to how confident he is in his short game.

“Harry asks Blockie, ‘Is your short game usually this good?’ And he said, ‘No, it’s usually better.’ How much confidence is that?!”

Now that is what you call confidence. Unfortunately for Block though, sometimes that comes across as arrogance.

It’s a very fine line isn’t it, and the general consensus is that the ‘Block Party’ has now run out of steam.
