Jordan Spieth posting a 62 in the final round of The CJ CUP Byron Nelson felt particularly significant, even if he went into Sunday at TPC Craig Ranch with next to no chance of winning the event.
It was another fourth place finish for Jordan Spieth on the PGA Tour this year. In truth, he was never really in the mix to win with Scottie Scheffler leaving the rest of the field behind. But it is definitely a positive sign for the 31-year-old.
And Spieth posting a flawless 62 in the final round has potentially whet the appetite for what may be just around the corner.
Of course, Spieth is one of the main talking points heading into the PGA Championship, with the event being the one major the Texan still needs to win to complete the career grand slam.
How Jordan Spieth reacted to Rory McIlroy backing him to win the career grand slam next week
It has been more than seven years since Spieth’s most recent major win, while he has not won on the PGA Tour in more than three. Nevertheless, it appears that he is being backed to triumph at Quail Hollow – by the man who most recently joined the career grand slam club.
Rory McIlroy left the golfing world on the edge of their seats at The Masters last month. But he made history as he just about got across the line at Augusta National.

And as revealed by Jack Hirsh on X, McIlroy told Spieth on the range at the Truist Championship that he will complete the set next week.
Spieth however, made the point that the second major of the year is taking place at a course McIlroy has plenty of happy memories of.
Jordan Spieth’s history at Quail Hollow ahead of the PGA Championship
Spieth has not played at Quail Hollow too often over the years. His best result in a strokeplay event came back in 2017 when the North Carolina course most recently hosted the PGA Championship as he finished in a tie for 28th.
But he does have some fonder memories of Quail Hollow. In fact, Spieth won all five matches he played at the 2022 Presidents Cup as USA retained the trophy.
That performance will count for little next week. But Spieth is just one of those players who could just as easily win by five as he could miss the cut after a nightmare couple of days.
It is going to be fascinating to see which one plays out.
