LIV Golf makes its return this week following The Masters, with Mexico City providing a unique stage for the league’s latest stop.
It is another opportunity for LIV Golf this week. Many of the biggest names on the PGA Tour are sitting out the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. And just like Doral, LIV is heading to a course viewers will have memories of.
Club de Golf Chapultepec hosted the WGC-Mexico Championship between 2017 and 2020. Interestingly, all of the events during that time were all won by players now featuring on LIV Golf.
But those in the field will be presented with a difficult task this week, with the altitude ensuring that the ball is flying so much further in the air.
How far Phil Mickelson is hitting the driver ahead of LIV Golf Mexico City
In fact, Phil Mickelson – who won the WGC in 2018 – outlined just how far his driver was now travelling.
Mickelson averages 294 yards off the tee on LIV this year. But in the video he posted on social media, he carried the ball 362 yards.

“Alright, we’re here at altitude at Mexico City, it is fun yet challenging. It’s fun because the ball goes a long way. It’s challenging because trying to control your irons and get your distance control is very difficult. That’ll be the biggest challenge. But you can hit bombs, bombs up here. It’s awesome,” he said.
How current LIV Golf stars dominated WGC-Mexico Championship
Much like the BMW Championship on the PGA Tour last year, LIV Golf Mexico City has the potential to throw up some surprise results given that adapting to the conditions is such a key part of the battle.
But it is interesting that those who won at the course previously are all now on LIV. Dustin Johnson won either side of Mickelson’s victory in 2018. Meanwhile, Patrick Reed then won in 2020 – and it was Bryson DeChambeau who came second at that event.
Reed obviously has the most momentum after his impressive performance at The Masters. DeChambeau meanwhile, may feel that he has a point to prove after falling away on Sunday.
It was a surprise to see Mickelson miss the cut at Augusta National, while Johnson also failed to make the weekend. But the pair have shown some decent signs on LIV this year, so they will definitely be hoping to find themselves in contention in the coming days.
