Understandably, much of the attention following the ZOZO Championship was on Justin Thomas after the two-time major champion finished in a tie for second, but the likes of Nico Echavarria and Max Greyserman should certainly receive plenty of plaudits.
Of course, it was Nico Echavarria who clinched victory at the ZOZO Championship, with the Colombian winning by one over Justin Thomas and Greyserman. The latter began the final day three shots back of the eventual winner.
Greyserman flew out of the blocks on Sunday in Japan, as he made a birdie on three of the first four holes. And by the time he reached the turn, he found himself level with Echavarria. However, the birdies largely dried up on the back nine, with the 29-year-old making eight pars.
Greyserman is still awaiting his first win on the PGA Tour after securing his card back in 2023. But his form in recent months has been outstanding, with the youngster also finishing second at the 3M Open and the Wyndham Championship. His form helped get him to the BMW Championship during the FedEx Cup play-offs.
Max Greyserman lauded after his ZOZO Championship performance
And perhaps that debut win may not be too far away now. Speaking on The First Cut Podcast for CBS, Greg DuCharme suggested that he has been taken aback by how good all aspects of Greyserman’s game are proving to be.
“Extremely impressive. It’s now three of his last five events he has second place finishes, and could very easily say he should have a couple of wins in that stretch. His game is complete, he is a phenomenal all-around player, he’s playing with confidence,” he said.

“He’s clearly, clearly found something, the way that he rolls it is so impressive. He was pouring in 15, 20 foot putts, but it seemed like he was the guy in that last group that was outside looking in, and he’s holing the putts. He did miss a couple, a couple of eight footers, but it’s hard to say that something would have been different if he made all of his putts.”
Superb consistency since the US Open
Greyserman has not finished outside the top 33 at any of his last 10 events, stretching all the way to the US Open at Pinehurst in June. But plenty of tough tests and brilliant opportunities lie ahead.
By finishing 48th in the FedEx Cup standings, Greyserman has punched his ticket to the signature events next year. And clearly, it appears to be much easier to finish inside the top 50 once a player is involved in the signature events.
The challenge will be standing out when there are so many promising talents knocking on the door. Matt McCarty has won four times this year across the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour. Meanwhile, Davis Thompson also managed to win in 2024.
But it seems that Greyserman has all of the tools to get himself in the winner’s circle before too long.
