Rory McIlroy has just boosted his chances of a first win at The Masters, ending his third round sitting top of the leaderboard, two shots ahead of Bryson DeChambeau.

McIlroy made six successive threes at the start of round three at Augusta National, where he is yet to triumph despite his glittering career.

Northern Irish star McIlroy was told he needed a fast start on Saturday to win The Masters, having started his round in T3.

But his six-under score has risen to 12-under, with McIlroy having now posted rounds of 72, 66 and 66 heading into Sunday.

A four-time major champion, he carded two eagles during his third round, more than any other player in the field.

Grant Horvat says ‘it’s over’ after Rory McIlroy’s eagle at The Masters

And one of those eagles really impressed Grant Horvat, with the YouTube golfer taking to social media after his second at Augusta.

McIlroy posted a phenomenal three on the par-five 15th in Georgia, after which Horvat simply wrote on X: “Yup. It’s over.”

But the sweeping statement came before DeChambeau produced some magic of his own, ending his round with a stunning birdie.

The American carded a third-round 69 to keep tabs on the leader, having started his tournament with a 69 and a 68.

What happened the last time Rory McIlroy made two eagles in one round at a major?

McIlroy also caught the eye of Dan Rapaport with the second of his two eagles, which unsurprisingly really got the patrons at Augusta going.

Analysing the approach shot, he wrote on X: “That eagle from Rory is just different gravy… sky-high straight ball off the tee, 330+, allowing him to hit 6-iron into the green, which he can hit higher than anyone… now eagled 2 and 15 and it’s starting to feel like destiny.”

It arrived after his three on the par-five second early on in his third round, helping him rocket up the leaderboard.

Elsewhere in the golfing world, Smylie Kaufman was left stunned by proceedings at a truly unforgettable day at the iconic course.

DeChambeau’s fellow LIV Golf player Patrick Cantlay was among those to have impressed, with early leader Justin Rose falling back after a disappointing day.

All eyes were, however, rightfully on McIlroy, who as per Justin Ray made multiple eagles for just the second time in a single major championship round.

The other arrived at The Open Championship in 2014, also in the third round, which was a tournament he went on to win.

That represented his second success at the event and indeed represents his most recent major championship success.
