Golf journalist shares what surprised him about Rory McIlroy’s Wells Fargo Championship win

Golf journalist Kit Alexander has shared what he actually found surprising as Rory McIlroy went on to win the Wells Fargo Championship for a fourth time on Sunday.

Rory McIlroy goes into this week’s PGA Championship with back-to-back wins under his belt, with his latest triumph coming at Quail Hollow last week.

The Northern Irishman was one shot behind Xander Schauffele heading into the final round at the Wells Fargo Championship, but many will have been tipping the 34-year-old to catch the American.

McIlroy’s driving had been ‘extraordinary’ across the first three days, and he had not made a single bogey in the second or third round.

And he went on to produce a masterclass to go and win by five, with McIlroy shooting a 65 on Sunday to blow Schauffele away.

McIlroy, of course, is approaching a decade without winning a major championship, and there have been plenty of occasions when his game has not quite been there at the crucial moments.

But speaking on the Sky Sports Golf Podcast, Kit Alexander suggested that he was almost taken aback by the manner in which McIlroy got across the line.

“I think a lot of people would have looked at how it was set up going into the final round and would have had a lot of confidence for Rory; I’m not surprised he won it, I’m somewhat surprised and incredibly impressed and buoyed going into a major week by exactly how he won it, because that was vintage Rory,” he said.

“The stuff we’ve been saying for the last decade since he last won a major, if Rory has his A game, he’s the best in the world. And you can only say that so many times until the last time he brought that A game was too long ago. That’s a reminder right there of what Rory McIlroy is capable of when he’s on his game.”

Perfect chance to end his major drought

McIlroy’s fans will hope that there is another gear for the 34-year-old heading to Kentucky this week, as he looks set to battle with even more of the world’s best.

Scottie Scheffler should be back, while Brooks Koepka can never be discounted when it comes to the major championships, so the field is going to be incredibly strong.

Certainly, if McIlroy can take this form to Valhalla, then he is undoubtedly going to be in contention to win his fifth major title at the scene of his last.
