With the Chevron Championship nearing its conclusion on the LPGA Tour, not everything has won praise despite the intense competition between the players on course.
The Chevron is considered one of the biggest tournaments in all of golf and on the LPGA, is very much the title the players want to win.
Last year’s winner Nelly Korda is out of contention this time around but at the summit, there is a huge battle underway to see who can come out on top.
However, while the golf is interesting and the players are producing the goods on course, it’s safe to say that the crowds in and around the event aren’t exactly huge.
And because of that talking point, golf fans have been slamming the LPGA’s decision to move the Chevron and in turn, affect the crowds on course.

Golf fans unhappy with Chevron Championship move
Up until 2023, the Chevron was played at Mission Hills but a new sponsorship agreement saw the tournament moved to The Jack Nicklaus Signature Course at The Club in Carlton Woods.
However, since that move, the crowds have not quite flocked to the fairways as much as we used to see and at the 2025 event, there’s been plenty of space out on course.
And with those images doing the rounds, golf fans have jumped in and slammed the tournament for moving venue and ruining the atmosphere.
One fan suggested the Chevron get binned as a major, as they criticised the move to Texas.
“Terrible galleries in Houston this week for the Chevron Championship. Houston needs to step up! This tournament is not the same now that it’s not at Mission Hills. Carlton Woods is not a major venue. I vote we dump it as a major and go back to 4 majors like a proper tour.”
While another fan suggested the move just hadn’t worked out due to a saturated market.
“The girls deserve so much more than this. Grandstands were so empty the last two nights. I wish the LPGA would focus on smaller city venues where they’re the biggest event in town. Too much to compete with in major metros. It’s not where they’ve been successful in the past.”
Indeed, the criticism continued, with another fan claiming the increase in purses had ruined the history of the event.
“Majors are built around tradition, history, and iconic venues. They eviscerated this event when they moved it – now it has none of those three things, no matter how much money Chevron throws at the purse.”
While another pointed out the change in venue and dates as an issue.
“Never should have moved out of Mission Hills. They should have moved the date back instead of all the Asian stops.”
Interestingly, someone seemingly local to the event pointed out how the course itself was hard to access for the general public.
“This event is played behind private gates at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, almost an hour from Houston. Accessing this venue is not easy, no onsite parking, the course is nothing special. The Champions Tour will draw better crowds in the same Community two weeks from now.”
While finally, another fan lamented the TV coverage for contributing to the struggles.
“TV coverage is not up to major standards either. No one in charge seems to care.”
With such good golf on display, it’s a huge shame that such a big tournament isn’t generating the attention it rightfully deserves.
Once again, it feels like the powers that be have made a bad decision on one of our major tours.
