Golf fans react to Luke Clanton driving statistic from Rocket Mortgage Classic

Golf fans have been left both impressed and perplexed by Luke Clanton as the PGA Tour shared where the amateur ranks off the tee heading into the final round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Luke Clanton had a genuine chance to become the second amateur to win on the PGA Tour this season, with Nick Dunlap winning The American Express earlier in the year. Unlike Dunlap, Clanton has no plans to turn professional anytime soon.

No-one registered a lower score in the third round in Detroit than Clanton, who posted a 65 to find himself three shots back of Aaron Rai and Akshay Bhatia.

And it seems that the distance Clanton gets off the tee is playing a key role in his success, with the PGA Tour showing on X during the early stages of the final round that the youngster ranks fourth for driving distance in the field this week…

Obviously, a number of golf fans were very impressed by Clanton averaging nearly 320 yards with the driver this week, particularly with the amateur only making his second tour start, having previously finished inside the top 50 at the US Open this month.

But there was also something which did not appear to sit quite right with some, with Clanton’s swing yet another on tour right now which looks anything but orthodox.

He takes a wide stance, and his swing ends with his left foot pointing in completely the opposite direction to the tee, with his right foot also proving to be extremely active. Of course, world number one Scottie Scheffler has shown that a textbook technique is hardly a must if you want to achieve great things in the sport.
