The Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines could prove a much sterner test than what the golfing world saw at last month’s Farmers Insurance Open.

With Riviera Country Club unable to host the event after the Los Angeles wildfires, the PGA Tour confirmed the San Diego venue would host its second event of the season.

The 2024 Farmers Insurance Open, which Harris English won, was particularly testingStrong winds suspended play during the second round, and 18 players withdrew after the PGA Tour confirmed that the Genesis would be played at the San Diego course.

However, a stronger field, including Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas, will take to the course this week – and Torrey Pines could be about to play even more challenging.

During a practice round this week, Ben Griffin posted a video of his ball disappearing into the rough just yards from the fairway.

Golf fans online believe that PGA Tour players are fortunate to have galleries present to spot their shots, which end up in the rough.

“Good thing you guys have spotters,” this fan wrote. Another added: “That’s why we call that lost ball a “tour drop” with no penalty. You’re not finding that without a spotter.”

“They have galleries to help them find the ball,” this X account wrote.

There were other golf fans who suggested this week’s event could have a major-like feel.

“oh, this is gonna be a fun week, ain’t it,” another fan wrote.

This fan said: “We have the season’s first major this week…”

Another added, “As much as I hate not seeing The Riv this year, double Torrey within a month is pretty sick.”

Genesis Invitational hit with Tiger Woods blow

Tiger Woods confirmed during last weekend’s Waste Management Phoenix Open that he intended to play the Genesis Invitational. The 15-time major winner’s return to action would have been a massive boost for the Tour after a difficult start to the season.

Yet, after the sad passing of Woods’ mother, Kultida, the 15-time major winner won’t be teeing it up at Torrey Pines.

Now, the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill feels like the likely return date for Woods. Between now and the event in Florida, three less significant PGA Tour events take centre stage on the schedule.

Woods has been competing in the TGL and will tee it up again on February 19 when Jupiter Links GC play New York Golf Club at the SoFi Centre.
