Bryson DeChambeau can divide opinion among the golfing world due to his slightly odd tendencies.

Whether it’s his highly unique swing, obsession with breaking boundaries with equipment, high levels of self-confidence or his controversial switch to LIV Golf, the 30-year-old is never far from the headlines.

Whatever DeChambeau is doing is clearly working this week as he finds himself well-placed heading into the final two rounds of the PGA Championship at Valhalla.

The American shot a six-under 65 on Friday and sits just three shots adrift of leader Xander Schauffele.

Unsurprisingly, DeChambeau hit the headlines long after his round finished.

As darkness closed in at the Louisville venue, DeChambeau was spotted on the Valhalla driving range, still working on his swing as he chases down his second major championship.

And the golfing world loved the 2020 U.S. Open champion’s work ethic after footage of his late-night practice emerged.

Popular X account, ‘Flushing it’, wrote: “Bryson DeChambeau made 7 birdies to shoot a 6 under 65 to move to T4 at the PGA Championship. He then practised in the dark until 10 pm. Bryson is one of the best players in the world and it’s no accident – he works harder than anyone else on the planet.”

Another X user, Amit Mohindra, said: “No question. He’s supremely talented and add his work ethic to that and he’s defo one of the best in the game. No doubt about it.”

Mr Indiana added: “How can you not love this guy?”. Ali Bomaye, also on X, agreed. “People will hate on him, but I respect the grind,” she wrote.

Finally, Bradley Olson added: “Keep up the great work, we love you.”

DeChambeau divides opinion.

His high level of self-belief and sometimes outlandish comments can leave him looking foolish.

But his level of commitment to improving himself and the sport as a whole cannot be questioned. His YouTube channel, for example, has come under scrutiny, perhaps unfairly. He’s bringing the game of golf to a broader audience who wouldn’t usually be completely engaged.

Furthermore, there are very few players who are willing to push the boundaries physically. DeChambeau is obsessed with pushing the limits on the golf course, and having a player who’s more than happy to experiment and try new things can only be a positive factor in the growth of the game.

Looking ahead to the weekend, the 30-year-old will need to go low on Saturday to really stand a chance of making a push for the Wanamaker Trophy.

Collin Morikawa and Schauffele look unflappable at the moment, so birdies and eagles are required for the big-hitting American.

DeChambeau going full-throttle in search of birdies on Saturday could be compelling viewing for the watching patrons and fans around the world.
