When you think of world number one golfer Scottie Scheffler, you very much think of a man who is calm, collected, and in tune with everything he’s doing on the golf course.

Unlike certain players – such as Tyrrell Hatton or Jordan Spieth for example – Scheffler is very adept at keeping his emotions in check on the course and rarely looks flustered.

Indeed, it is that calmness and mentality that has seen Scheffler become the success story he’s turned into and a lot of his nine wins last year came from him simply keeping it together while others faltered.

However, in what was a rare outburst of emotion from Scheffler during round of the WM Phoenix Open, the world number one appeared to lose his cool.

Walking towards his golf bag after a shot he wasn’t happy with on 15, Scheffler was caught on camera smashing his club into the bag and knocking it to the floor in doing so.

And over on social media, it’s safe to say that Scheffler’s behaviour left plenty of fans a bit shocked.

Scottie Scheffler shocks golf fans with angry outburst at the WM Phoenix Open

A lot of golf fans love to see a bit of emotion from the top players. It often resonates with the average golfer and many feel it brings them closer to real life.

With Scheffler, there was plenty of reaction over on X, as fans suggested Scottie Scheffler was finally showing he was both human and, susceptible to the odd outburst.

One fan seemed excited to see Scheffler angry, making the following point:

“People think Scottie Scheffler is a chill guy. You think he got this good being chill? He’s a freaking competitive psycho. He wants to beat everyone and hates losing more than he loves winning. Excited to have him back.”

While another fan suggested a bit of passion makes Scheffler more relatable.

“Scottie Scheffler is the GOAT this generation needs passion!”

Another claimed that seeing someone at eight under par get so angry shows the difference between the top players and the amateurs.

“I’ve never seen 80. Crazy to think he’s 8 under and is mad, haha. I suck”

With another backing that stance up.

“I wish I could shoot a collective -9 through 3 rounds and be this disappointed in myself”

Another golf fan laughed at Scheffler, saying “My guy is one of us”, while another also made light of the situation and jokingly referenced Scheffler’s bizarre arrest in 2024.

“Prison will do that to a man.”

While going back to the more serious tone, one viewer went with the theme of wanting to see more of this from Scheffler.

“Good show some edge. He’s too damn boring and not compelling for a world #1”

Scheffler actually shot a round of three under and while not completely out of the tournament, he is some eight shots off Thomas Detry at the top of the leaderboard.

For Scheffler to win, he’s going to need to harness all his emotion and play one of the best rounds of his life to reel Detry and others in.
