Golf fans are less than impressed after Shane Lowry was involved in an incident during day two of The Open Championship at Royal Troon.

Lowry looks back to his best after previously being well-fancied before last month’s US Open at Pinehurst No.2.

The Irishman has given himself an excellent chance of landing his second Claret Jug after carding a two-under 69 on Friday. Speaking after Thursday’s action, Smylie Kaufman noted the 37-year-old’s impeccable ball striking.

Lowry’s second 18 wasn’t short of drama, however.

The par-four 11th has proven one of the trickier holes at Royal Troon over the first two rounds.

Lowry was fortunate to find his drive in the right-hand rough, but that’s where things got interesting for the 2019 Champion Golfer.

The 37-year-old’s second shot was heavily impacted by the thick rough and hooked left into the bushes. Lowry seemingly accepted his effort was lost and immediately placed a new ball down, subsequently landing his fourth shot on the green and near the pin.

However, after a fan identified his wayward second shot, the Irishman spent over 20 minutes assessing where he could drop the ball and how to approach his fourth shot.

After the incident, Lowry will be pleased to have escaped with a double bogey.

Golf fans fume after what happened to Shane Lowry at The Open

Golf fans around the world have since reacted to the incident, with some suggesting the 20 minutes taken was “insane”.

One fan wrote: “20 minutes between shots is ridiculous from Lowry and the rules guys.”

While another fan added: “Can we put rules officials on the clock? 20 minutes that took for Lowry. Aggregious.”

This fan couldn’t believe what they were watching.

“I have never seen anything like this before,” they wrote. “It’s been 20 minutes and counting since Shane Lowry last hit a shot. There is a massive discussion as to where the ball is, where it should be, etc. The current leader at The Open is in some trouble.”

Given that amateurs typically follow the three-minute rule, this incident with Lowry is yet more evidence that professionals play a completely different game from the rest of us.
