The PGA Tour have had their fair share of criticism in the last 12 months over certain decisions and having made a big call about the TOUR Championship overnight, they are once again under the spotlight from fans.

The TOUR Championship has always been a bone of contention among both the players and the fans.

The current format allows for players to enter into the season finale with shots advantages based on their ranking in the FedEx Cup throughout the season.

However, that will now change, with the PGA Tour confirming that those shot discrepancies will now be removed.

That decision seems to fit with what many top players – like Scottie Scheffler – have suggested in the past.

Of course, it won’t be to everyone’s liking and some will argue that introducing it mid-season when the likes of Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are already in the driving seat, is a bit off.

Indeed, over on social media, things seemed very much split.

Golf fans react as PGA Tour makes big changes to the TOUR Championship

As with any big call by the PGA Tour, there’s plenty of fan reaction over on the social media platforms we all know and love.

X is awash with comments from fans discussing the change. And while usually, golf fans are pretty much all swayed one way, this time it feels like the decision has left people divided.

One fan celebrated the news, even expressing surprise.

“Wait a minute, is the PGA able to make positive changes to their events?”

Another backed that stance, suggesting it was about time the change happened.

“Good that was the most stupid rule I’ve ever seen”

While another also seemed to back the call, adding:

“Thankyou whoever you are. Silliest thing I’d ever seen implemented. Come on man!”

However, while there was a bit of praise, there were plenty of fans who claimed the change was a bit ridiculous and effectively, made the season FedEx points pointless.

My biggest issue with this is there’s now no reward for how well you play throughout the season. You’re better off getting to the “playoffs”, restarting the points and whoever plays the final 4 weeks the best wins. To bring it all to ONE tournament on the same course is dumb

“This a terrible idea. It’s exciting to see guys compete for spots in the Tour Championship throughout the season. Now, the point system is rendered useless. I would say allow the #1 to start at -5, #2 start at -3 and #3 start at -1.”

While another fan claimed it made the event feel sub-standard.

“Wow, so now the TOUR Championship is no different from the John Deere Classic. Just a boring stroke-play tournament.”

Finally, there were suggestions that the event should be changed to matchplay.

“Ask ANY golf fan how to fix this horrible format and they’ll all give the same answer… you gotta at least give match play a try guys”

The PGA Tour can never win with big decisions

While some of the criticism towards the PGA Tour and Jay Monahan is warranted, there are some things which they decide that are just never going to please everyone.

This is one of those occasions. The TOUR have made a bold call to change something that is routinely criticised and are now being criticised again for that decision.

Effectively, that is just the way things go for big organisations and at times like this, they have to just stick to their guns and see how it goes.

Changing to a match-play event would be interesting. But even then, people would complain and suggest that on any given day, any player can beat another.
