Justin Thomas came roaring back to life in round one of the Scottish Open to lead the field going into day two.
Thomas, who has been struggling throughout 2024, came from nowhere to card a stunning round of eight-under par and put himself one clear of Sun-Jae Im just behind him.
It was a low scoring day in general in Scotland as Rory McIlroy also showed his worth by carding a very neat and tidy five-under.

However, it was the performance of Thomas that caught a lot of people off guard.
The American’s iron and wedge play was very much on point throughout as he left himself with countless good looks for birdie.

Thomas, then, has put himself in early contention to win in Scotland and coincidentally, it’s come during the week that the PGA of America have announced Keegan Bradley as their Ryder Cup captain.
Of course, Thomas was in the headlines in the last Ryder Cup as he was picked by Zach Johnson over Bradley to make the final 12.
And after his brilliant round at The Scottish Open today, some golf fans are convinced that Thomas has now realised he needs to start playing well to get picked for Bethpage in 2025.
Golf fans think they’ve worked out why Justin Thomas has started playing well after round one of the Scottish Open
For poor old Thomas, a lot of golf fans have chosen to twist the knife a bit rather than praise him for his first round today.
Of course, Thomas can expect comments after what happened with the 2023 selection.
And over on social media platform X, golf fans have been quick to suggest that Thomas now knows he won’t be getting picked just because he’s good pals with the skipper!
Some fans picked up on the same vibe, calling for Keegan Bradley to ignore this ‘one off’ performance.
“pay no attention Keegan— bethpage plays slightly different”
@stepien commented.
While another user, @whosaidmarg had similar thoughts, sayiing:
“No. Keegan please ignore this post.”
The pile in on Thomas seemed to continue as well, with some suggesting that his opening round was just a one off and that he’d soon be back down the field come the weekend.
Thomas, then, will be hoping to silence the doubters and produce a similar round tomorrow.
