Golf Channel broadcaster Rex Hoggard has shared the moment from Rory McIlroy in the final round at the Wells Fargo Championship which made him double take as it highlighted how he was on a completely different level to Xander Schauffele.
Rory McIlroy made it four career wins at Quail Hollow as he produced a stunning final day 65 to beat Xander Schauffele by five shots.
McIlroy went into the final day one shot back of the American, who is one of the most consistent players on the PGA Tour, particularly this season.
But the Northern Irishman has looked to be back to something like his best over the last few days. Brandel Chamblee noted that McIlroy had been ‘extraordinary’ with the driver. And it seems that he made a real statement on the first on Sunday.
Broadcaster stunned by Rory McIlroy moment on the first hole in final round of Wells Fargo
Speaking on the Golf Channel Podcast, Rex Hoggard noted that he was amazed by just how far McIlroy hit his opening drive; which left him with just 146 into the 511 yard par four.
“You say he was keeping up with Rory, I don’t know about that. I’m looking at the stats right now, I had to do a double take on this, and this is what forced me to go fire up the shot link on my laptop because I had to be sure, Rory had 146 yards in for his approach on the first hole, Xander had 206 and it was driver to driver, they both hit driver there,” he said.

“Now granted, Xander clearly didn’t hit his driver well, but that’s a 60 yard difference if I’m doing the math right, that’s not even close. And it wasn’t that exaggerated throughout the course of the day but Rory was at a different level.”
Northern Irishman finding form at perfect time
In fairness to Schauffele, those numbers only tell part of the story, with McIlroy taking a much more aggressive line and cutting off a lot more of the corner.
But McIlroy was just imperious off the tee over the week. According to the PGA Tour website, McIlroy led the way in the field for strokes gained off the tee and driving distance.
Schauffele meanwhile, was 11th for driving distance.
That is perhaps ominous for McIlroy’s rivals heading into this week’s PGA Championship at Valhalla; the site of McIlroy’s most recent major championship triumph.
