When it comes to the modern golfer and the game in general, it’s a far cry from the days when the likes of Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus were dominating the fairways.

The modern golfer has all the advantages of improved technology in clubs, balls and even training aides, which very much assist them in getting better.

However, it’s not all about just relying on the added tech and hoping to get longer or straighter.

A number of modern players are now directly following Tiger Woods’ lead in being committed to gym work.

And according to Grand Slam winner Gary Player, that aspect of the game is something his good pal Jack Nicklaus was wrong about.

Gary Player says why Jack Nicklaus was wrong about with modern golf

In a clip of Player shared by the Golf Digest, the legendary nine-time major winner suggested that players will continue to hit the ball further and further as time progresses.

And in doing so, it will prove Jack Nicklaus wrong about working out to improve at golf.

“You know what’s going to happen in 30 years time? The incentivisation, all the prize money they play for now, and with the ball going so far and the metal heads, and these guys now at college [weight training].

“When I started weight training for pro golf, they all said I was a nut, even my best mate Palmer, and Nicklaus said ‘you cannot do weight training and play golf’.

“These guys, they’re going to come out like Lebron James. They’re going to drive all the par fours, there’ll be no more par fives, they’ll drive the greens like you’ve never seen in your life. And I tell them at The Masters they’re going to drive it onto that first green and they nearly have a heart attack.”

Who are the longest drivers on the PGA Tour?

While distances isn’t the be-all and end-all in golf, it has certainly helped and we’ve seen players really try to add length to their game over recent years.

Bryson DeChambeau very much sets the benchmark in terms of hitting it long but players like Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka are not too far behind.

PlayerAverage driving distance (yards) – PGA Tour 2024
Cameron Champ322.8
Rory McIlroy320.2
Byeong Hun An317.1
Kevin Dougherty316.8
Chris Gotterup316.2
Alejandro Tosti 315.6

Of course, players like Nicklaus and Player never relied on pure power, it was all about touch, feel, and understanding the game of golf.

However, put one of those in today’s game, with the modern tech available, and there’s a chance they’d dominate even more than they did in their hey-days.
