The future of LIV Golf has arguably never looked less certain following the news that Brooks Koepka has left the league ahead of the final year of his contract.

LIV Golf finds itself in uncharted territory with one of their biggest names leaving.

It was inevitable that LIV were going to lose a superstar at some stage. The league offered something so different to the PGA Tour that there was always going to be someone who rued their decision to jump. And Koepka has proved to be that man.

But LIV have now received a boost ahead of the 2026 season.

LIV Golf have agreed a three-year contract extension with team captain

It baffled many that the story that announced Koepka’s departure from LIV featured a headline that focused on Talor Gooch taking over the captaincy of Smash GC.

Gooch has now succeeded the five-time major champion. It remains to be seen which player now replaces Koepka on the team.

But according to Front Office Sports, LIV have now agreed a three-year extension with Gooch. The deal is set to be announced before the 2026 season commences.

Interestingly, the report notes that it is not yet clear what has happened with Koepka’s 25 per cent stake in the team. LIV already owns the remaining amount.

A deal LIV Golf desperately needed to agree

Gooch signing a new contract certainly does not make up for Koepka’s exit. But it will have provided a much-needed lift to the league in the wake of the 35-year-old’s departure.

Gooch has been one of the players who has stepped up since leaving the PGA Tour. He has won four times, while he clinched the individual title in 2023.

He also finished sixth in the standings in 2025, winning at Valderrama along the way.

Do you think Max Greyserman would be a good signing for LIV Golf?

Would LIV be right to part with an eight-figure sum to sign Max Greyserman?

Gooch has attracted criticism over the last few years for comments he made about LIV players not being invited to major championships. And he did not actually play in a single major in 2025.

But it is the case that he had never finished higher than 14th in a major before that. Meanwhile, he only won once on the PGA Tour.

So this contract extension is unlikely to move the needle. However, with Koepka leaving and no marquee signings through the door this winter, LIV simply cannot afford to lose any more of their best players.
