There was arguably no bigger statement of intent from LIV Golf ahead of their debut than the signing of Dustin Johnson, with the American the highest ranked player in the field for their inaugural event.
Dustin Johnson was one of the former world number ones in the field at Centurion Club in 2022, while he had won The Masters title less than two years earlier. At the time of his departure, he was 13th in the world rankings.
It is probably fair to say that joining LIV Golf has done little for Johnson’s game. He has finished inside the top 10 in just two majors since the league began.
He has won three times on LIV, but he registered just one podium finish in 2025. At 41, it does appear that his best days are well and truly behind him.
Nevertheless, it seems that he is going to continue to play on LIV for the foreseeable future.
Fans react as Dustin Johnson reportedly signs a new LIV Golf contract
According to Flushing It, Johnson has signed a new contract with the league. He will continue to captain the 4Aces team. It is not yet clear how long the deal is for.
It is not entirely surprising that the two-time major champion has committed his future to LIV. From the outside, Johnson appears to be very content with where he is.
Certainly, few fans on social media appear to be shocked. One person reacted to the news by posting: ‘He no longer has the game to compete on the PGA Tour.‘ Another said: ‘LOL. Dude would miss 75% of cuts on the PGA Tour. He’s laughing all the way to the bank.’
Someone else wrote: ‘He will continue to be irrelevant‘, while another commenter claimed: ‘Congrats to DJ. He’ll never win another meaningful tournament.’

The criticism of Johnson continued, with one person writing: ‘So he’s staying retired?‘ Another said: ‘Who cares – he’s a ghost‘.
One person posted: ‘Makes perfect sense. He’s not competitive in real leagues so he needs a circuit that has no cut so he can come from 10 strokes back tied to 45th and end up with the top 10 because he shot 66 on the final round whereas in any event with a cut, he never would’ve seen the weekend‘.
And perhaps you could say there was a slight defence of Johnson’s decision, with someone else writing: ‘Why wouldn’t you just take the money I mean it’s obviously he doesn’t even care much about winning I don’t blame him‘.
How Dustin Johnson has regressed with each season on LIV Golf
LIV obviously feel that Johnson has been a good signing. And there is no question that he is one of the biggest names of the last two decades. Only Tiger Woods, Greg Norman and Scottie Scheffler have spent more time at world number one than Johnson.
However, Johnson finished 54th twice in 2025. He also missed the cut at three of the four majors during the season. He is nowhere near being the force he once was.
Statistically, he was 25th in the league for strokes gained this past season. He has fallen further and further back with each campaign.
| Season | Dustin Johnson’s strokes gained rank (LIV Golf) | Missed cuts in the majors |
| 2022 | 1st | 1 |
| 2023 | 5th | 1 |
| 2024 | 18th | 2 |
| 2025 | 25th | 3 |
Much depends on how much money LIV are paying Johnson as part of this new contract. And it would be naive to think that his days of winning tournaments are definitely over.
But it is hard to shake the feeling that this new contract is much better for Johnson than LIV Golf as they continue their fight for credibility.
