When you look at someone with a fine golf swing over the years, you needn’t look much further for near perfection than Ernie Els.
‘The Big Easy’ has been blazing a trail for South African golf since the late 80s.
Els, who now plays on the Tour Champions and is in fact a seven-time winner on that particular tour, also won four majors throughout his career on the PGA Tour as well.

Known for his languid style and big frame, Els is also one of the smoothest operators in the game when it comes to the actual golf swing.
It makes sense, then, that if he’s giving tips out for amateurs on how to drive the ball straight, it’s worth taking notice. Luckily for us, there is footage out there of Els explaining exactly how to be better with the big stick.

Ernie Els’ tip for golf beginners to get better with the driver
Ernie Els has one of the most repeatable and watchable golf swings in the game, even today.
Much like someone like Adam Scott, Els seems to swing the golf club effortlessly, which is probably why he is still so successful now as a 55-year-old.
Speaking on a golf tips video for XXIOUSA previously, Els revealed just what the beginner golfer can do to improve their driving.
“So try and get your normal set up, a good ball position on the driver, just inside your heel, and a nice wide stance almost the width of your shoulders,” Els explains.
“And then, you want to bend from the front and the middle area, don’t get too straight cos you’ll get stiff.
“Your left hand is really neutral on the club, and then in the handshake position get your right hand on it and then…have a couple of good waggles. You know, you’re hitting a stationary ball and then make sure you have a nice soft grip on the golf club and then, just make a nice, big shoulder turn.”
Els then hits an effortless drive down the middle in the clip, demonstrating just how his advice works in practice.
Ernie Els’ PGA Tour career in numbers
Few golfers can say they have won four major championships so when all is said and done, Ernie Els will go down as one of the greatest to ever do it.
Over a remarkable PGA Tour career, Els played nearly 500 PGA Tour tournaments, winning 19 times and adding a further 47 wins around the globe on other tours.
| Ernie Els on the PGA Tour | |
| Events played | 485 |
| Wins | 19 |
| Top 10s | 126 |
| Top 5s | 80 |
| Prize money (USD) | $49,385,600 |
He made the top ten a seriously impressive 126 times and in the end, pocketed nearly $50m in prize money along the way.
Couple those stats with 125 events played on the Champions Tour and 67 top tens on there along with the seven wins, and it’s safe to say that Els has had quite the career.
