A report has shared how those at the DP World Tour’s headquarters have reacted to an interview Sergio Garcia gave in which he discussed his plans to return to the tour in the hope of qualifying for the 2025 Ryder Cup team.

Sergio Garcia, of course, was one of those to resign from the PGA Tour and DP World Tour in 2022, jumping ship to LIV Golf.

That ruled the Spaniard out of qualifying for the Ryder Cup team in Italy in 2023. And as he remains a member of the Saudi-backed tour heading into this year – he finished runner-up at LIV’s season opener in Mayakoba – the 44-year-old is not currently going to be eligible to qualify for next year’s event in New York.

DP World Tour baffled by Sergio Garcia comments

Garcia however, appears to believe that he will have a shot at forcing his way into Luke Donald’s lineup.

Speaking on The Rick Shiels Golf Show, Garcia said that he will become a member of the DP World Tour again in the hope of qualifying for Team Europe in 2025.

However, according to a report from The Telegraph, those comments have left those working behind the scenes at the DP World Tour baffled.

Garcia owes more than $1 million in fines and apparently faces a nine-week ban before he could play another DP World Tour event once he rejoins. And thus, there has been a suggestion that he could be in complete denial.

LIV players will surely feature in Luke Donald’s team next year

So clearly a lot needs to happen before the 2017 Masters champion is starting to stake his claim for a spot in the Ryder Cup team.

One thing that does appear to be for certain is that Team Europe will include LIV players for the first time next year. Both Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton have jumped ship ahead of this season. And it is hard to imagine the Europeans going to Bethpage Black without Rahm, at least, in the ranks.

Garcia may be hoping that he becomes another LIV player Team Europe simply cannot be without.
