Denny McCarthy is up and running at The Truist Championship and after some favourable conditions at Philadelphia Cricket Club, he’s been speaking about just how low the scores could be.

A week after Scottie Scheffler tied the PGA Tour record at -31 at the Byron Nelson, Keith Mitchell is already at nine under through one round in Philadelphia.

Just behind Mitchell are a number of players, with Denny McCarthy in second on eight under and a host of players like Rickie Fowler just a shot further back.

With conditions very much helping and soft greens also contributing, we could well see the Cricket Club offer up a low scoring weekend.

And speaking on the issues of the course, Denny McCarthy has had his say.

Denny McCarthy shares his thoughts on Philadelphia Cricket Club

With Denny McCarthy having played 200 times on the PGA Tour and yet to get a win, going eight under in round one will give him the ideal chance to break that hoodoo this week.

Indeed, the course is playing favourable and McCarthy has admitted that attacking the pins is very much the strategy.

“Like I said, just the greens being receptive, not much wind, new venue. So I think they might have been cautious on a few pin locations. When we have short irons and wedges with not much wind, we’re looking to attack, and it seems like a lot of guys have done that today,” McCarthy said in his press conference.

Asked further if his upbringing in Maryland has helped him, McCarthy suggested it has potentially aided him.

“Maybe, I don’t know. This is really similar to Baltimore Country Club, which is also a Tillinghast. My brother is a member at BCC, and a lot of holes out here remind me of BCC. I’ve played Baltimore Country Club a number of times, and I really like that place,” he continued.

“So when I come here, I see a lot of similar visuals off the tee and how the greens are. So I have a pretty good feel and idea of how the course plays and how the greens can tilt and how they can break and stuff. So I felt pretty comfortable.”

Denny McCarthy’s PGA Tour record

It feels like McCarthy has been around for years now and without glancing at the stats, you’d assume he would have won a few events.

However, he has not won a single PGA Tour event in 200 goes now, with two runner-up finishes his best effort yet.

McCarthy has another 28 top ten finishes to his name which has ensured he’s always kept his TOUR card and been able to get in the mix.

But that elusive win needs to come soon and having shot himself into contention at the Truist, now is the time for him to strike.
