It won’t be Tommy Fleetwood’s time at The Open Championship this year.

Fleetwood is a hugely popular figure, and he has received plenty of support at Royal Portrush during the first three rounds of The Open Championship.

Earlier this week, Fleetwood raved about the Open crowds, and that was when he was playing with hometown hero Rory McIlroy!

The 34-year-old Englishman is still waiting for his first PGA Tour win, although he does have 42 top-10 finishes to his name.

And that wait will go on beyond the end of this week, after he posted scores of 73, 68 and 69 for the first three rounds at Portrush.

And Fleetwood cut a frustrated figure when speaking to the press after his third round at The Open.

Tommy Fleetwood states what ‘annoyed’ him about his third round at The Open

Fleetwood has played solidly at Portrush, but he hasn’t quite done enough to be in contention.

Unusually, the 34-year-old’s approach play was well off this week, and he is currently languishing down in 119th position in strokes gained approach category.

Fleetwood was asked to give his thoughts on his third round.

He said: Yeah, I mean, disappointed with — still had the last six holes, if you like. I felt like walking off the green, I was 5-under for the tournament but felt like I could have been two or three better at that point as well. That was with a couple of mistakes.

Sort of had a really good round going and would have liked to have got more and then just disappointing finish. A couple bad shots, a couple mistakes, and overall sort of left feeling a bit annoyed or dejected or disappointed, whichever way you put it. But it wasn’t a bad round, it just wasn’t what we needed.

You just want to try and — Saturday, the conditions were nice, and I think there was definitely some scores out there, and you just want to be one of those that puts one of those together. You can’t do anything about what the guys that are a long way in front of you do. But at least you feel satisfied if you’ve done all you can.

You know, it was good. Played a lot of good stuff. Just have to look to tomorrow now and try and have a good finish and see where we’re at.

Fleetwood is clearly disappointed with how he has performed in Northern Ireland this week.

He just needs to be patient, because his time will definitely come.

Tommy Fleetwood’s Open stats

Fleetwood hasn’t been anywhere near his best at Portrush.

Here is how his numbers look from his week at The Open Championship:

StatsFleetwood’s rank
Strokes gained off the tee69th
Strokes gained approach119th
Strokes gained around the green37th
Strokes gained putting4th
Strokes gained total32nd

Fleetwood will be encouraged by how well he has putted at The Open this week. If only he could have struck his irons like he usually does.

As long as he keeps working hard and putting in the hours at the practice area, he will be just fine.
