Bryson DeChambeau once again used his opening round at The Masters to put himself in the mix at Augusta National, with the LIV Golf star posting a 69 to leave himself tied for fifth after Thursday.

Bryson DeChambeau has had a turbulent history with Augusta National. Before 2024, the 31-year-old’s best ever finish at The Masters had come back in 2016 when he was an amateur.

DeChambeau had been ridiculed for once claiming that Augusta is a par 67 for him due to his ability to hit the ball so far off the tee. Had he still believed that, he may have been a little disappointed with how he started the 2025 Masters.

The two-time US Open champion made seven birdies, but four bogeys left him a handful of shots behind Justin Rose, with the Englishman stealing the show in the opening round.

What Dan Rapaport finds uncomfortable about watching Bryson DeChambeau

DeChambeau was dominant off the tee on Thursday. And with that, Dan Rapaport has hinted that perhaps some people owe the Crushers captain a bit of an apology.

Speaking on Dan on Golf, Rapaport noted that DeChambeau’s comments do make a lot more sense now. However, he did admit that there is a part of his game which he cannot get on board with.

“He shot three under. He made one, two, three, four, five – he made seven birdies today. He just drives it so good,” he said.

“It’s the reason why he said initially that it’s a par 67 for him because he’s right, he drives it so far. He birdied two, he bogeyed five which everyone bogeyed, he bogeyed seven which is a hole that’s a lot about hitting the fairway and control. He bogeyed 12, he hit it in the bunker long. I’ve got to say, this is a note I had for myself, watching him hit bunker shots is so uncomfortable because all of his clubs are the same length. His lob wedge is a seven iron length, it looks really bizarre.”

How many times Bryson DeChambeau has broken 70 at Augusta National after the opening round at The Masters

DeChambeau looks ready to create a new narrative around Augusta. He went into 2024 having not made the cut in either of his previous two appearances at the first major of the year.

His top 10 finish last year was a sign of what was to come. But what perhaps gets forgotten is that DeChambeau did not shoot level par or better in any of his last three rounds in 2024.

In fact, DeChambeau has shot just five rounds in the 60s in 29 attempts so far. And just two of those have come after the opening day at Augusta.

He is surely going to need to add to that tally if he is going to stand any chance of adding a green jacket to his collection.
