While there is no question what the big story of Sunday at The Masters was, there were some other interesting talking points – including what Bryson DeChambeau said about Rory McIlroy after they had played together in the final round at Augusta National.
Rory McIlroy won The Masters after one of the most enthralling days of major championship golf of all-time. The Northern Irishman threw away his lead, went four clear, threw it away again, went one in front with one to play, and ended up in a playoff.
It was one of the most satisfying victories golf has had. But comments made by his playing partner on the day subsequently caused a bit of a stir.
Bryson DeChambeau had a surprisingly miserable final day, posting a 75. His challenge was all but over after the 12th hole. But it was what he said afterwards which prompted the most debate.
Corey Conners discusses Rory McIlroy’s behaviour at The Masters following Bryson DeChambeau’s comments
DeChambeau seemed baffled McIlroy did not speak to him during the final round. That saw DeChambeau come in for criticism, with his comments almost coming across like sour grapes after he had had such a disappointing day.
It was Corey Conners who played alongside McIlroy on Saturday at Augusta. And ahead of the RBC Heritage, the Canadian was asked what the five-time major champion’s behaviour was like in light of DeChambeau’s comments.
“Yeah, I think we’re all kind of just in — there’s a job we’re trying to do. We certainly had a few chats. I’ve gotten to know Rory a little bit. Been paired together, played with him on Sunday at The Players. I wouldn’t say I’m super talkative, but we had a few conversations out there,” he said.

“I don’t know if that would have been different on Sunday when everything was on the line. But yeah, again, I’m happy to talk to my playing partners but happy to just kind of stay in my zone, as well.”
Conners may have been the perfect foil for McIlroy on Sunday at The Masters
Conners is an outstanding player. Had he putted better, he may well have won his first major title in the past week. And he seems to be a fantastic person that a lot of players like.
McIlroy certainly seemed to benefit from playing alongside him on Saturday at Augusta, with the Northern Irishman posting his second 66 in as many days.
In fact, Johnson Wagner suggested that Conners may have been the perfect playing partner for McIlroy in the final round rather than DeChambeau.
Conners is such a steady player which may have helped keep McIlroy on an even keel for one of the most important rounds of his life.
And judging by Conners’ comments this week, McIlroy was more than happy being in his company when they had the chance at Augusta.
