Collin Morikawa and his caddie, Billy Foster, had a front row seat for the Scottie Scheffler masterclass at The Open Championship on Friday.
Scheffler was solid on day one of The Open, posting a round of three-under par 68, but he caught fire on day two at Royal Portrush, and carded one of the most stress-free 64s you are likely to see.
After his third round 67, Scheffler admitted he has a great desire to win The Open, and it would be a huge shock if he didn’t do exactly that on Sunday afternoon.
Having played alongside Scheffler for the first two days, Morikawa will be under no illusions now regarding the levels he needs to reach in order to compete with the world number one.

Morikawa hit more than 200 practice balls after day one at The Open, while Scheffler warmed down by hitting just 25.
That itself tells us a lot about where the two players are at right now.
Collin Morikawa’s caddie reveals what he said to Scottie Scheffler at The Open
Billy Foster has been temporarily caddying for Morikawa over the past two weeks.
Foster has seen everything there is to see in the game, having caddied for the likes of Seve Ballesteros, Darren Clarke, Lee Westwood and Matt Fitzpatrick.
The man from Yorkshire, England, saw Tiger Woods up close and personal in his prime, so he knows a world-class player when he sees one.
Golf journalist Dan Rapaport asked foster what he made of Scheffler’s all-round game at Portrush this week.

He said: “I asked Billy Foster, who has seen all the greats of the last 40 years up close, his take on Scheffler after caddying in his group the first 2 days. Foster worked for Morikawa this week and said this to Scottie on the 18th on Friday: ‘Different class and simply brilliant’.”
And the former caddie of Phil Mickelson – Jim ‘Bones’ Mackay – is another man who witnessed first hand Tiger Woods at his best.
He said: “I never thought in my lifetime I’d see a player as close to Tiger as this man currently is. Scottie Scheffler just blows my mind every time I watch him play.”
Scottie Scheffler vs Collin Morikawa stats at The Open
The world number one probably made Morikawa feel like he is worse than he actually is during the first two rounds at Portrush.
Here is how their Open stats look when put together side by side:
| Open stats | Scheffler rank | Morikawa rank |
| Strokes gained off the tee | 60th | 114th |
| Strokes gained approach | 2nd | 147th |
| Strokes gained around the greens | 97th | 100th |
| Strokes gained putting | 1st | 44th |
| Strokes gained total | 1st | 134th |
What really sticks out there is Morikawa’s strokes gained approach numbers.
He was an elite iron player in his day, but he has clearly regressed in that department over the past year or so.
Scheffler is on another stratosphere to Morikawa right now, and their respective performances at The Open highlighted exactly that.
