Luke Donald will be the European Ryder Cup captain for the third consecutive time at Adare Manor in Ireland in 2027.

Donald’s appointment as Ryder Cup captain for the third time was confirmed on Wednesday.

Now Collin Morikawa has reacted to the news that Donald will once again lead the European Ryder Cup team into battle.

What do you think about Luke Donald’s appointment?

Is this good or bad news for Europe?

Morikawa has seen close-up how Donald operates, having been on the losing side in the last two Ryder Cups.

The US team was dismantled by the Europeans at Marco Simone in 2023 and the same happened at Bethpage Black in 2025, a late American comeback in the singles notwithstanding.

And with that in mind, it was interesting to get an American player’s perspective on Donald returning to captain the European team yet again.

The two-time major champion is in Orlando right now, and he spoke to the media ahead of the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Morikawa was asked by reporters what he made of the news that Donald will return as Europe’s Ryder Cup captain once again.

Yeah, I mean, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, the American said.

I know there’s precedent set ahead before. But I know personally, through Luke Donald, he’s an amazing human being.

It sounds like their team loves him and they have kind of found that groove. So good for them and they’re going to be great team come next year.

The American team will certainly have their work cut-out if they are to prevent the European team from winning their third straight Ryder Cup in Ireland in 2027.

With Donald at the helm once again, beating the Europeans away from home will be a daunting prospect for the United States.

Rory McIlroy’s reaction to Luke Donald announcement

Rory McIlroy was also asked by reporters on Wednesday to share his feelings on the Luke Donald announcement.

If Tiger Woods is not the next US Ryder Cup captain, who should get the job for Adare Manor?

“No one’s asked me.”

Yeah, it’s amazing,” McIlroy stated.

I think it’s obviously a huge advantage for the European team to have that continuity and that consistency. I was sort of banging on that drum going into Bethpage. And we’ll have it even more so again, you know.

We might not have — the team may be a little bit different, or it could be, you know it was obviously really similar to Bethpage to what it was in Rome. I maybe envision a couple other guys maybe breaking their way on to the team.

But it’s wonderful to have Luke back. There’s not one player or one person behind the scenes that helps with Ryder Cup Europe that isn’t thrilled that Luke agreed to come back and do it again.

The European team are clearly delighted to have Donald back as their leader but the Americans may well be wishing that the Englishman called it a day after Bethpage.
