Collin Morikawa might have lost out to Hideki Matsuyama at The Sentry but the 27-year-old has been told he’s up there with the best ever in terms of one skillset.

Morikawa produced a stunning final round to finish at 32-under for the tournament but watched on as Matsuyama broke records to finish at -35.

For Morikawa, it was a continuation of the fine form he showed at the TOUR Championship at the end of last season and bodes well for his 2025.

And after Smylie Kaufman predicted Morikawa could win a few majors in 2025, the same man has now told us that Morikawa is actually one of the best ever when it comes to one part of his game.

Collin Morikawa told he’s one of the best ever when it comes to mid-irons

Speaking about Morikawa and more specifically his mid to long iron game, Kaufman admitted he was in awe of the American and admitted that Morikawa is actually one of the best mid-iron players he’s ever witnessed in the game.

“He’s a magician, man,” Kaufman said. “When we talk about guys I think often, any time Jordan’s [Spieth] chipping we’re like ‘This guy’s a magician with his wedge’.

“But Collin really is one of the best middle iron players I’ve ever seen. To have as much ability to just hit fades and have the ability to hit it ten or 15 yards shorter, based off what he wants to do. This ability to take 10-15 off a 6-7 iron, most people would find too hard to do but he’s so good. He’s really unbelievable with his middle to long irons hitting his numbers.”

Collin Morikawa’s approach stats tell a different story

While watching Collin Morikawa in full-swing is a sight to behold at times, Kaufman’s comments on him being one of the best mid-iron players ever aren’t exactly backed up by the stats from 2024.

According to the PGA Tour’s official statistics, while Morikawa is 42nd in terms of strokes gained on the filed in approach play, his other numbers don’t impress as much.

He is 143rd for GIR, 113th for proximity to the green, and way down in 175th when it comes to accuracy from approach shots from more than 200 yards.

Indeed, compare him to Scottie Scheffler, for example, and Morikawa is a mile behind the world number one in approach stats.

Approach stats 2024Strokes gainedGIR (%)Proximity to hole<100 yards>100 yards
Collin Morikawa0.29265.1937″934′ 1016′ 10
Scottie Scheffler1.26973.1633″1131’012′ 4

Of course, that could all change in 2025 and Morikawa might find himself higher up but looking at just Scheffler’s comparison, he has work to do.
