Collin Morikawa told he needs to make exactly the same change as Scottie Scheffler ahead of The Masters by Johnson Wagner

There is plenty of reason to think that Collin Morikawa is going to be one of the favourites to win The Masters at Augusta National next week.

Collin Morikawa is doing everything but win on the PGA Tour right now. It is scarcely believable that the 28-year-old’s most recent victory came at the ZOZO Championship in 2023.

He finished second at The Sentry to kick off the year, while he was pipped at the line at the Arnold Palmer Invitational by Russell Henley. Like Scottie Scheffler, Morikawa has not finished outside the top 25 this year.

Meanwhile, his record at The Masters is outstanding. His worst finish at Augusta National in the last four years is tied for 18th, while he has registered three top 10s in a row at the first major of the year.

However, Morikawa has been encouraged to make a significant change if he is going to realise his full potential and perhaps add a green jacket to his two majors so far.

Speaking on 5 Clubs, Johnson Wagner encouraged Morikawa to switch up his putter with every other part of his game more than good enough to triumph at The Masters.

“When you talk about players like Ludvig needing to improve his short game, Collin Morikawa had way more success early than Ludvig did. The guy won two majors, he won a World Golf Championship, he won a tour event immediately coming out. And so, he has made those strides over the last couple of years in his short game,” he said.

“Had you said that two years ago, I’d say absolutely not, he can’t do it. I think one thing he needs to do is switch to a mallet putter. I think he is too inconsistent with the blade, and the data’s just out there with the mallet. And for a guy that’s seen what Scottie did when he switched last year, I think that’s the only thing holding him back.”

Where Collin Morikawa’s putting ranks on the PGA Tour so far in 2025

Certainly, Morikawa’s putting has been the weakness in his game in 2025.

There is no-one on the PGA Tour who has been better from tee to green, with Morikawa first for strokes gained in that category.

But he is well outside the top 50 with the flat stick.

The positive news is that Augusta’s greens do not need to be unbelievably difficult for the best players in the world. Ultimately, there are spots to leave the ball which leave more straightforward putts.

And that is particularly important for someone like Morikawa who is so good with his irons. If his approach game is as strong as it has been over the rest of the year, he may not even need to be close to being the best putter in the field to emerge victorious.
