There is absolutely no question at all that Collin Morikawa has one of the highest ceilings of any player on the PGA Tour right now.

Collin Morikawa took no time to prove that he was a potential superstar as he won two major titles in his first eight starts in the sport’s four biggest events. Meanwhile, he is a player USA captains can seemingly pair with anyone and rely on to deliver points in both the Presidents Cup and the Ryder Cup.

However, 2022, 2023 and 2024 were trying years for the 27-year-old. Morikawa won once on the PGA Tour during that time, and that was the ZOZO Championship in 2023. Of course, that event does not tend to boast the strongest field each year.

There were definitely some better signs for Morikawa in 2024. He registered eight top 10s on the PGA Tour, while his worst finish in the majors was tied for 16th. He was in the top five at both the Masters and the PGA Championship.

Collin Morikawa suggests what he’s now trying to do like Tiger Woods

It seems imperative that he gets back to winning ways in 2025. So it is encouraging that he finds himself one shot off the lead at The Sentry heading into the final round.

And it appears that he is looking for something of a mindset shift. Speaking after Saturday’s round, Morikawa noted how he is trying to be much more intentional every time he is stood over the ball.

“No, it doesn’t mean more aggressive, it just means you’re putting all your effort into that one shot. I think when you look at this, if I looked at it right now, it’s, like, yeah, we got 20 more events for the rest of the season, you can be ho-hum about it and, yeah, I want to win, but that’s not the mindset, right, it’s, I’m going to focus on every shot and I’m going to put in as much as I can into every shot,” he said.

“And that’s what, you look back at the greats, like, they did that. You look back at Tiger, like, he did that every single week. I think if I asked myself, did I do that the past six years, every time, probably not, you know. But it’s hard, it’s hard to do that, but that’s what I’m going into this year is saying, you know, I’ve got four days, let’s see what I can do.”

How Tiger Woods’ greatest season started with victory at Kapalua

Of course, it was The Sentry – then known as the Mercedes Championships – which marked the start of what would become arguably the greatest golfing season of all-time in 2000.

Tiger Woods beat Ernie Els in a dramatic playoff to secure his first of nine victories across the season. Els said Woods would be hard to beat in the majors that year after their showdown in Kapalua. And Woods would indeed go on and win three of the biggest prizes before 2001 arrived. The Tiger Slam would then be completed at the Masters.

Expecting any player to get close to emulating that season would be ridiculous. But it is also impossible to not be inspired by what could be achieved over the next 12 months.

Scottie Scheffler is the most likely name to dominate 2025 if one player stands tall over everyone else. But Morikawa certainly has the talent to be the man if it is going to be someone else who emerges from the pack.
