Collin Morikawa is the biggest name in the field this week at the Rocket Classic, with the world number five presented with a golden opportunity to secure his first win of the season on the PGA Tour.

It appears to be imperative that Collin Morikawa has a good week at the Rocket Classic. The 28-year-old has not finished inside the top 10 on the PGA Tour since The Players Championship.

It is a surprise that the two-time major champion has not won this year, having finished second at both The Sentry and the Arnold Palmer Invitational. However, Morikawa has now fallen out of the top six places in the qualification standings for the Ryder Cup.

But Morikawa will surely have his sights set on ending his wait for a victory in the coming days.

Collin Morikawa suggests what PGA Tour players are saying about Detroit Golf Club

With the signature events now in the rearview mirror, the Rocket Classic does boast a weaker field than golf fans have been accustomed to in recent weeks.

But that does not mean that Detroit Golf Club is a second-rate golf course, by any means.

Asked about the plans to renovate parts of the course following this week’s tournament, Morikawa suggested that many of the players are big fans of the current layout.

“Yeah, look, I love the course the way it is. I get people want to restore stuff, but it’s a great course. Like people can talk about the bones, but from a golf course aspect I think the members I’m sure love it,” he said.

And taking out trees, like I talked about at Oakmont, I love trees, trees are what outlines for me how you picture through holes, and it’s very hard to make golf courses look amazing when you take out trees because everything kind of blends in.

“But you never know, it could also go the other way and it could be great. But I think when guys, and I know players that come here this week, there’s not really complaints. We know you’re going to have to shoot low, but we enjoy the golf course, we enjoy it how it is.

“I didn’t actually hear it until I was playing yesterday and one of the old pros was walking around and I think he was taking it in. I actually saw him on 14. I actually didn’t know 14 they’re taking out the pond.

“Yeah, I don’t know if it’s to modernize games, why there are a lot of renovations on making it old, but that’s not my department.”

How Collin Morikawa has performed at the Rocket Classic

Morikawa has only made one appearance at the event now known as the Rocket Classic.

In 2023, Morikawa ended the week at 24 under par, leaving him in a playoff with Rickie Fowler and Adam Hadwin.

Ultimately, it was Fowler who secured the much-needed victory with a birdie in the playoff.

Morikawa meanwhile would secure his most recent PGA Tour victory shortly after at the ZOZO Championship.

For a player of his calibre, the current wait is simply too long.
