Collin Morikawa has shared the advice that he once heard from Tiger Woods concerning ball-striking that he continues to keep in mind to this day.
When people think of the best iron players on the PGA Tour today, it is likely that most will think about Collin Morikawa, with the 27-year-old capable of the most outstandingly crisp strikes into greens.
That ability helped the American win two majors in his first couple of years as a professional on tour, with the 2020 PGA Championship being followed by a triumph at the following year’s Open Championship.
The last couple of years have been more challenging for Morikawa, who has won once on the PGA Tour since the end of 2021, but he appears to be starting to find some form once again – having finished in the top five at The Masters and the PGA Championship earlier this year. He has also not finished outside the top 25 in any event since teeing it up at Augusta National.
Collin Morikawa shares advice he received from Tiger Woods
And it appears that something seems to have clicked with Morikawa and the quality of his ball-striking once again, with Morikawa now fifth on the PGA Tour for strokes gained this season.
Perhaps Tiger Woods played a part in his improvement, with Morikawa telling The Smylie Show how Woods’ previous advice has really stuck with him.
“What I’ve done, and I think why I’m hitting the ball a little better, I wouldn’t say it’s amazing, but it’s definitely not where I was earlier this year, a year ago, two years ago, was I’ve now matched and figured out where the club face was, and it’s so hard to do, but I started just messing around and saying okay, I’m going to start this ball and put it on the toe and just find the centre of the face, and learn how to hit the centre of the face,” he said.

“I’ve talked to Tiger, this was a few years ago when Charlie was just getting in and, not that I’ve ever met Charlie, he’s like, ‘yeah, all I’m telling him to do is you can swing as hard as you want, but you just need to find the centre of the face. If you can find the centre of the face, you can do whatever you want with your golf swing, but the best players always come back to impact and they’re hitting the centre of the face because they wear out that spot’.
“And I started just screwing around with almost like setting the club where the ball wasn’t on the face and finding out how to hit the centre, and then starting it on the heel. I watched Sahith Theegala, the dude sets it on the hosel and I’m like, this is scary. But if you know how to move your hands and find the centre of the face, you can screw around and have fun like that.”
So much more to come from two-time major champion
It is ominous for many of Morikawa’s rivals that he appears to gradually be edging closer and closer to being back at his best, as he clearly has the potential to blow the field away when everything clicks.
The scary thing is that there is so much more to come from Morikawa in the years to come, particularly if he is taking on advice from arguably the greatest to ever do it.
