Collin Morikawa appears to have a golden chance to end his current wait for a win on the PGA Tour, with the two-time major champion just one shot off the lead heading into the final round of The Sentry.
Of course, it is no surprise to see Collin Morikawa very much in the mix to win The Sentry. The 27-year-old is yet to finish outside the top 10 in Kapalua during his career, with his best result coming in 2023 as he finished second.
| Year | Collin Morikawa’s The Sentry finish |
| 2020 | T7th |
| 2021 | T7th |
| 2022 | T5th |
| 2023 | 2nd |
| 2024 | T5th |
Morikawa is a player who has a bit of a point to prove having failed to win in 2024. While he registered eight top 10s during the season, a player of his calibre should certainly be looking to win at least once a year on the PGA Tour.
But there are plenty of positive signs heading into 2025. Morikawa made nine birdies and one eagle on Saturday as he posted an 11 under par round of 62 to leave himself one shot behind Hideki Matsuyama. Meanwhile, he is four shots clear of third place Thomas Detry in Maui.
Collin Morikawa claims one part of his game was ‘really, really good’ during the third round of The Sentry
Morikawa hit 16 greens in regulation. And speaking after his third round, he suggested that he was really pleased with his iron play.

“Yeah, today was really, really good,” he said.
“Couple shots out there a little squirrely, but for the most part the irons were center face, knew where they were going. A little bit off on distance here and there, but felt really, really good, which was nice to have to put a round together like that from start to finish.”
The problem with Morikawa’s promising performance in Maui
It will shock no-one to see that Morikawa was in the top two for strokes gained with his approach play during the third round at the Plantation Course. He gained more than four shots on the field in that particular area.
| Strokes gained category | Collin Morikawa’s third round rank |
| Off the tee | 11th |
| Approach play | 2nd |
| Around the green | 33rd |
| Putting | 19th |
| Total | T1st |
Morikawa has spoken of changing his iron setup ahead of this week having felt that he was getting into some bad habits. So he will take a lot of encouragement from his performance so far.
Perhaps the problem stems from the fact that Morikawa has such a good record at The Sentry. It is difficult to know whether there is reason to read too much into his showing this week.
But it definitely appears that he is doing all he can right now to show that he is ready to step things up a gear in 2025.
