Day one of the Truist Championship is in the books and Collin Morikawa looked very good indeed at Philadelphia Country Club.
Morikawa posted an opening round of seven-under-par 63, and he’s currently sitting two shots adrift of first round leader Keith Mitchell.
After Day one at the Truist Championship Morikawa was full of praise for Joe Greiner.
It was his first competitive round without JJ Jakovac on the bag, and the 28-year-old clearly vibed very well with Max Homa‘s former caddie.
Morikawa split with long-term caddie Jakovac last week, and now he begins a new and hopefully exciting era with Greiner on his bag.

One thing’s for sure, the former PGA Championship winner and Open Champion has proven that he has what it takes to win the very biggest tournaments in world golf.
And he couldn’t have picked a better moment than now in the calendar to start peaking.
Collin Morikawa brings in old favourite for the Truist Championship
Morikawa brought one of his old favourites back to the bag for the Signature Event this week.
Just after The Masters, Morikawa added a mallet putter to his bag in place of his trusty old blade model.
However, that experiment didn’t last long, although he has insisted that it doesn’t mean the end of the road for the mallet putter.
The two-time major champion responded when asked if he put a new putter in the bag for the tournament in Philadelphia.

He said, “Yes.“
Morikawa then responded when asked if that means it’s over for the mallet shaped putter.
The 28-year-old said, “It’s not over. The last few days at home I was putting, I went back to the blade and made a lot of putts and felt comfortable. So why not stick with that instead of kind of going out on the putting green and spending an hour or two trying to figure out do I use this, do I do that? Just stick with what I’ve been seeing at home.“
Morikawa’s day one stats at the Truist Championship
When he’s on song, the 28-year-old is incredibly hard to beat.
And he compiled an exceptional round of golf at Philadelphia Cricket Club on Thursday – one that he made look way too easy.
| Statistical category | Morikawa on Truist day one | Rank |
| Fairways hit | 10/14 | T-7 |
| Greens in regulation | 16/18 | T-7 |
| Scrambling | 100% | T-1 |
| Putts per GIR | 1.56 | T-8 |
| Strokes gained total | +3.792 | T-3 |
Those numbers are very solid indeed from the two-time major winner, and it’s no surprise that he shot 63 in the end.
Morikawa looked very much in control during the opening round of the Truist Championship on Thursday.
And it seems like he has found some form at just the right time.
