The PGA Tour is considering a major revamp of the season-ending Tour Championship at East Lake.

A report from the Athletic states that the Tour is assessing several options, and a new format could emerge at the lucrative finale in Atlanta. One possibility is a new bracket-style arrangement to decide the FedEx Cup champion.

Match play, of course, has been mentioned. Medal-style matches could also occur, which would appease television networks that may be hesitant to embrace a format that could be over by the 13th hole.

Changes could occur this year, although the Athletic states that the new format is more likely to be implemented in the 2026 season. The proposed changes come after Scottie Scheffler raised an issue with the current FedEx Cup format, suggesting that the arrangement couldn’t be considered a season-long race with the winner decided at one tournament.

Speaking after the second round of The Sentry, Collin Morikawa was one of the first players to be quizzed on the news.

“I don’t mind it. I know some guys don’t like it at all the way it is right now. I don’t mind it how it is,” he said.

“I think it plays out to, you know, yeah, you could have a really good season like Scottie did and win it or not win it, right, as we have seen the past couple years. I did hear about it briefly; I read up on it; I don’t have the New York Times, so it kind of scrolled me out after the first paragraph. I do, I know the concept of what was brought up, I don’t know how deep it’s gone through the Tour and how true it is. I think there’s a better way than what I saw or what I’ve heard, but you know.”

He added: “I just think the way I’ve heard it and the way, from what I’ve heard, right, from one person, I think there’s a better way to play it out than what I heard. But I don’t know what’s set in stone or not. Whatever it is you just got to live with it.”

When asked about the possibility of a medal match, Morikawa said: “That’s my problem, like I said, one day can you say, you know, if you were whatever seed and you lose and you shot 5-under and you lost to a 7-under, can you say my season was worth a 20, or it would be probably like a 16th place? Or a T-16 all the way through? Tough, right?

“You show up here, and we could have every member of the PGA TOUR show up here this week. Like I said, anyone can win. That’s what’s great about golf. So that’s my thing. I think there’s a better way; I don’t know where we’re at with that.”

What has Rory McIlroy said about the current FedEx Cup format?

One player whose opinion is valued on the PGA Tour is Rory McIlroy, and the four-time major winner was asked about the format during 2024’s FedEx Cup playoffs.

McIlroy disagreed with Scheffler and claimed the current iteration provides plenty of excitement right up until the 72nd hole at East Lake.

“I love this format because if it wasn’t this format, none of us would have a chance against Scottie because he’s so far ahead! So I really like this format! He’s so far ahead, and you don’t expect Scottie to finish outside the top five either,” the Northern Irishman explained.

“But I think it makes the Tour Championship more exciting from a consumer standpoint.”

Scheffler cruised to victory at East Lake last year, finishing on 30 under, four shots clear of Morikawa. The world number one started the week two shots clear of Xander Schauffele after leading the FedEx Cup standings after the BMW Championship.
