When Collin Morikawa finished second at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March, it appeared almost inevitable that he would soon end his wait for a victory following his most recent win in 2023.
Collin Morikawa was one of the most impressive performers in the opening weeks of the season. Morikawa finished second at The Sentry before also ending up as the runner-up at Bay Hill.
He would then follow that up with a 10th place finish at The Players Championship, and a top 20 at The Masters. It continued to look incredibly impressive from the world number five.
However, he has not had a top 10 on the PGA Tour since TPC Sawgrass. And he has not had a top 20 in either the PGA Championship or the US Open.
Collin Morikawa suggests what dip in form all comes down to
Morikawa is now facing a fight to secure his spot at the Ryder Cup, having fallen out of the top six spots in the qualification standings.
There have been plenty of changes from the 28-year-old of late. Morikawa has parted ways with another caddie, with Joe Greiner not on his bag for the Rocket Classic.
But Morikawa is not naive to think that the biggest issue right now is not within his game. Speaking ahead of his second appearance at Detroit Golf Club, the two-time major champion explained what he believes his dip in form to have been down to.

“Yeah, it started off great. Even though I haven’t won yet this year, it started off very strong. Over the past let’s call it two months just haven’t been amazing. I can point at certain parts of my game, but to me it all comes down to my ball-striking. Even though the numbers look good, that’s what frees me up and that’s what allows me to go and play golf,” he said.
“I’m just trying to work on that cut and getting it back to where I want it. That’s golf. You work so hard to make this game so precise. Like we’re talking about one, two degrees that we drive ourselves crazy, but that’s what we do. At the core root of it, we’re just really good at controlling little, little minute movements throughout our swing and it’s finding what works. We’re on a good path even though the results haven’t shown. It’s just very motivating to keep coming out and play well the rest of the year.”
Collin Morikawa’s 2025 PGA Tour statistics tell a different story
It is interesting that Morikawa believes that the ball-striking has been the big issue, because the statistics tell a different story.
Morikawa is inside the top 10 for most strokes gained metrics this year. However, there is a sharp drop-off when he gets closer and closer to the green.
| Strokes gained category | Collin Morikawa’s PGA Tour rank (2025) |
| Off the tee | 10th |
| Tee to green | 2nd |
| Approach | 6th |
| Around the green | 79th |
| Putting | 109th |
| Total | 8th |
It would be intriguing to know how much of a concern that is to Morikawa.
Scottie Scheffler showed last year that being the best putter on tour is not necessary to dominate. But it does appear that transforming his putting would make such a difference to Morikawa.
