Rory McIlroy is undoubtedly one of the greatest players of his generation, but how does he stack up against the greatest of all time?

McIlroy completed the Grand Slam in April, after winning The Masters at Augusta National, and in doing so, he became only the sixth golfer in the history of the game to achieve the feat.

However, McIlroy has admitted to having issues with motivation, after his triumph at Augusta.

His problems were exacerbated at the PGA Championship back in May. McIlroy’s driver was deemed to be non-conforming, and his name was subsequently leaked to the media.

However, his main issue recently has undoubtedly been a lack of motivation.

Rickie Fowler’s comments on his own struggles this week lent credence to McIlroy’s reasoning for his own problems.

However, the thing we must all remember is that the five-time major winner is a sensationally gifted golfer, and if he puts in the hard work off the golf course, he will be back winning again in no time.

Claude Harmon reveals what Butch Harmon told him about Rory McIlroy

There aren’t many people alive today who have witnessed first-hand the brilliance of the likes of Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and now McIlroy.

Butch Harmon is one of those people.

But where does the world famous golf coach rank the Northern Irishman amongst the likes of those names mentioned above?

Well, his son Claude Harmon has now told us the answer to that question.

When speaking on his Son of a Butch podcast, Harmon Junior shared what his father told him about McIlroy.

He said: When you look at Rory McIlroy now, he’s won the Grand Slam, five majors. I mean, I have been lucky enough, as you have, those of us who have been around the game a long time. I didn’t see Nicklaus really play, my Dad talks about it. My Dad will be 82 in August. He said, ‘I never really saw Gene Sarazen play a lot or Bobby Jones, but other than that..’. He’s like, ‘Rory McIlroy is one of the greatest golfers I have ever seen’. In my opinion, I watched my Dad work with Greg Norman, and I think Greg Norman is one of the greatest golfers I have ever seen. I got to watch my Dad work with Tiger Woods and he is the greatest. Rory is as good a golfer as you can find.

That’s quite the compliment from Harmon, considering just how many great golfers he has seen throughout the years.

Rory McIlroy’s career results on the PGA Tour

McIlroy has been an incredibly consistent performer on the PGA Tour over the past 15 years.

His outstanding record can be matched by few in the game:

McIlroy now has to find a way of getting back his motivation and hunger to win.

As he has mentioned on numerous occasions, he climbed his Mount Everest back in April, and now new goals and targets are required.

And as long as he continues to work hard, and has the ambition to achieve even more than he already has, there is no reason why he can’t go on and win another four or five major championships.
