While it was Scottie Scheffler who lifted The Open Championship title at Royal Portrush, there were few players who enjoyed a more significant couple of weeks on the British Isles than Chris Gotterup.

Chris Gotterup headed to the Genesis Scottish Open in 88th place in the FedEx Cup standings. He had previously missed nine cuts on the PGA Tour earlier in the year.

But perceptions of Gotterup’s year turned around in a fortnight. The 26-year-old won at The Renaissance Club after teeing it up with Rory McIlroy in the final group on Sunday. And he backed that up with a third place finish at The Open Championship.

Gotterup is now on course to not only make the playoffs, but head all the way to the Tour Championship. In fact, Gotterup has been backed to contend for a Ryder Cup spot at Bethpage.

Chris Gotterup hits back at prediction made before the 3M Open

However, it seems that not everyone expected Gotterup’s momentum to keep going this past week at the 3M Open.

Ahead of the event at TPC Twin Cities, one article predicted that he would struggle after the highs of his recent displays. And it appears that Gotterup did not forget about the claims.

He ended up finishing tied for 10th in Minnesota, five shots back of Kurt Kitayama. It was his first top 10 in the States this season – prompting Gotterup to poke fun at the prediction before the tournament.

What has gone largely under the radar with Chris Gotterup following his win at the Genesis Scottish Open

Gotterup did feel like a shock winner at the Scottish Open. It was one of the strongest fields any event affiliated with the DP World Tour will have all year, with Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele among those involved.

But it had gone completely under the radar that the youngster’s game was definitely trending in the right direction beforehand.

The eighth of his nine missed cuts this year came at the Valero Texas Open in early April. He followed that with four top 20 finishes in a row, albeit in events with weaker fields.

Gotterup finished tied for 23rd at the US Open. So while it is fair to say that few were talking about Gotterup before he teed it up at the Scottish Open, there is no doubt at all that it would be extremely unfair to suggest that was where his upturn in form began.
