Charley Hull was in fine spirits on day three of The AIG Women’s Open at Royal Porthcawl on Saturday afternoon.

Hull raved about the condition of Royal Porthcawl ahead of the Women’s Open, and she clearly loves the golf course.

After two tough rounds to begin with, Hull bounced back in style on day three of the Women’s Open.

Hull’s fine third round 66 catapulted her up the leaderboard into a tie for fourth.

She now sits just three shots adrift of the leader, Miyu Yamashita.

The pace of play on day three of the Women’s Open was much-improved, and Hull would have been delighted with that having fiercely criticised the slow rounds on the LPGA Tour in the past.

Now she has set herself up perfectly to win her first ever major championship.

The 29-year-old took an aggressive approach to day three of the Women’s Open as she set out early and went chasing the leaders.

She carded seven birdies and a solitary bogey to make up eight shots on the overnight leader.

After her third round 66, Hull was asked to give her honest opinion on the crowds at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club on Saturday.

She said: Yeah. Oh, yeah, it’s really fun. It’s always great to hear people shout your name and stuff. I think it’s always good fun.

There was loads of young kids out there. It was lovely. Had my little nephew around here. My sister said, can you sign his butt yesterday on the baby (indiscernible). I didn’t even realize, and I looked, like EJ, and she was, no, we’re going to frame it. It was quite cute. His first golf tournament.

Hull will have the fans right behind her on the final day of the Women’s Open on Sunday.

Now it’s very much down to her to go out and produce the goods at Royal Porthcawl on day four.

Charley Hull’s best finishes in majors

Hull has come very close indeed to winning a major in the past, but she’s never quite got the job done.

Here are her six best finishes in the majors throughout her career to date:

MajorYearFinish
Women’s Open20232
US Women’s Open2023T-2
Chevron Championship2016T-2
Evian Championship2022T-3
Women’s PGA Championship2018T-6
Chevron Championship2018T-6

Sunday at Royal Porthcawl will represent a great chance for Hull to break her major duck, with the Women’s Open there for the taking if she can produce another round in the mid-60s.

She certainly has the game required to win one of the big ones, but whether she has the mentality when the going gets tough is still yet to be determined.
