Bryson DeChambeau has not always had the easiest time since becoming a household name amongst golf fans, with the American proving to be an extremely polarising figure.

Bryson DeChambeau has never been afraid to push the boundaries in his quest to improve. He immediately became known for his use of a set of irons with shafts all the same length. Meanwhile, it really did feel as though his body transformation which started in 2019 went on to change the game.

Some fans have not always taken too kindly to DeChambeau’s way of playing the game. His processes can mean that he is not always the fastest player out on the golf course.

Meanwhile, DeChambeau is hardly likely to find himself alongside the likes of Rory McIlroy and Adam Scott when it comes to discussing the best-looking golf swings in the current era.

Nevertheless, the respect for the 31-year-old has risen considerably in recent years. It really felt like a moment of coronation of the man who had become golf’s most popular player when he was able to lift the US Open at Pinehurst last year.

DeChambeau is one of the players fans simply have to watch. But perhaps there are a couple of aspects of his game which still do not get the full credit they deserve.

Speaking ahead of LIV Golf Hong Kong, Crushers GC teammates Anirban Lahiri and Charles Howell III discussed the improvement DeChambeau has been able to make over the years.

“The one thing that I was thinking of when Bryson was answering the same question to you is that he’s gotten more mature on the golf course, off the golf course, and in general. I think that’s showing in how he’s approaching some of the most strategic courses, not trying to overpower every golf course, and he knows that’s his strength, but he also knows that putting is a strength. He also knows that iron play is a strength,” Lahiri said.

“It’s nice to see a more balanced Bryson DeChambeau on the golf course.”

“Yeah, I think two aspects of Bryson’s game that are incredibly underrated is how straight he drives it for how far he does. Yeah, I think that’s — anybody that plays with Bryson or sees him, they’re surprised at that, number one. Number two is he’s become a phenomenal putter. I remember when Bryson first came on the PGA TOUR and we were friends, and we have, I think, about the same — similarly and he’ll tell you he wasn’t a great putter. He didn’t enjoy it,” Howell III said.

“I was one of the worst,” DeChambeau interrupted.

“So he’s actually made himself from one of the worst to, in my opinion, arguably the best, and if not the best, he’s in the conversation of three,” Howell III continued.

“I think those are the two aspects, and it doesn’t matter what golf course he goes to. Those two things serve him well.”

Where DeChambeau ranks on LIV Golf for fairways hit and putts per green

It is obviously extremely early in the season, but DeChambeau is off to a strong start when it comes to hitting more fairways on LIV.

Last year, he hit 303 out of 560 to leave himself down in 36th – one place above Howell III. This time around, he has hit 51 of 84 – hitting six percent more fairways.

Meanwhile, he was just outside the top 10 for putts per green on LIV in 2024. When you couple that with the power he possesses, it is no surprise that he has become one of the best in the current game.
