Cameron Young has shared what he found particularly difficult about the conditions at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, with the American one shot off the lead heading into the final round in Detroit.
Cameron Young looks well placed to end his wait for his first ever PGA Tour victory, with the 27-year-old set to tee off in the penultimate group on Sunday alongside Cameron Davis.
Everyone inside the top 20 at Detroit Golf Club are within six shots of leaders, Aaron Rai and Akshay Bhatia, so there is everything to play for in Michigan. And who deals with conditions best in those final groups may well be able to come out on top.
Young made the error of bogeying the par five sixth on Saturday, but managed to make six birdies to keep himself right in the mix.

And speaking after his third round, the 2022 Open Championship runner-up shared what he found particularly challenging about the golf course.
“It wasn’t rock hard to begin with, so I feel like I was already hitting a lot of softer wedges, so it didn’t change that much to me,” he said.

“The wind is difficult, I mean the fairways are all kind of hallways between trees, and it’s not always easy to tell, you kind of know generally which way it’s going, but this wind I feel like was crosswinds all day.
“And it makes a huge difference if it’s 10 percent into you, or 10 percent helping, especially depending on the shape of shot that you hit, so that was the tricky part for me, just trying to manage your distance control with crosswinds like that is difficult.”
Why Smylie Kaufman may be backing Young to win Rocket Mortgage Classic
It may surprise some to know that Young is still awaiting that maiden victory at golf’s top table. He has five top 10s at the major championships, and he reminded everyone of his quality at the Travelers Championship when he shot a 59 to bring himself back into contention.
The course was incredibly soft last week, and that played into Young’s hands as he brought himself back into the mix to win. So he may fancy his chances of getting the job done this time around.
Smylie Kaufman backed that 59 to prove to be a big moment in Young’s career, and Sunday’s round may end up being the perfect opportunity to show that that was indeed a turning point for the New Yorker.
