Cameron Davis has shared what shocked him as he edged Akshay Bhatia to win the Rocket Mortgage Classic on Sunday, with the Australian winning on the PGA Tour for the first time in three years.
Cameron Davis secured only his second win on the PGA Tour – three years after he also came out on top at Detroit Golf Club. On that occasion, the 29-year-old needed a play-off to secure the title.
And it seemed that he was going to need another play-off if he wanted to win this time around, with Akshay Bhatia needing a par on the last to take the event past the 72nd hole. Bhatia – who held the lead with Aaron Rai heading into the final round – had made eight pars on the back nine leading into the final hole.
However, the 22-year-old would three putt on the final green to hand Davis the title. Bhatia’s second putt will probably haunt him for a little while, with the ball falling agonisingly on the low side.
Cameron Davis shocked after Rocket Mortgage Classic win
Davis was clearly emotional when his victory was confirmed, but he admitted that he never expected Bhatia to miss his fairly short putt to send the tournament into overtime.
“I wouldn’t wish what happened to Akshay on anyone, but I’ve done a lot of grinding to kind of get myself out of a hole, and just all of a sudden to do that, it’s pretty good,” he said.

“When Akshay missed that putt, it’s a combination of shock and feeling bad for him, but at the same time just realizing that the huge burden of trying to win again is off the shoulders.”
Much-needed turning point for the Australian
Davis definitely deserved a slice of luck after what had happened on the par five 14th when he went for the green in two, with his ball unbelievably rolling back off the putting surface and into the water. He was unable to get up and down from there to save his par.
This could be a really important moment in Davis’ career, as his previous top 30 finish actually came back at The Masters. He subsequently missed the cut at both the PGA Championship and US Open.
Bhatia meanwhile, is probably going to need a little time to bounce back from this tournament, particularly as the scars will probably only truly heal once he has holed a tough putt when the pressure is really on.
