When golf fans consider the best drivers of the golf ball in the current game, it is likely that their thoughts will turn to either Bryson DeChambeau or Rory McIlroy.
Rory McIlroy has been a phenomenal player off the tee throughout his career. His athleticism has allowed the Northern Irishman to be consistently among the longest hitters for the best part of two decades.
In fact, McIlroy has been outside the top two for the longest hitters just once in the last nine seasons.
But of course, Bryson DeChambeau seems to have moved the goalposts with his driving in recent years. He has certainly inspired a lot of players to add speed to their swings.
Cam Smith makes a big claim about Rory McIlroy’s driving
With Cam Smith playing alongside DeChambeau on LIV, you would imagine that he would opt for the Crushers captain as the best driver in the game.
However, speaking on The Colin Cowherd Podcast, the Australian suggested that he would not only pick McIlroy as the best driver around, but insisted that he cannot see how any player will ever change his mind.

“Rory is the most impressive driver of the golf ball I have ever seen. I don’t think anyone could ever be better than him off the tee,” he said.
“He just does all the right stuff, hits it in the right places. He can be very dominant when he is on, I feel like he is very, very tough to beat.”
Rory McIlroy’s driving statistics across his PGA Tour career
Only Aldrich Potgieter has driven the ball further than McIlroy this year. Meanwhile, McIlroy is third for strokes gained off the tee this season, with Scottie Scheffler leading the way and Rico Hoey separating the two best players in the world.
| Year | Average driving distance (yards) | PGA Tour rank |
| 2025 | 323.9 | 2nd |
| 2024 | 320.2 | 2nd |
| 2023 | 326.1 | 1st |
| 2022 | 321.3 | 2nd |
| 2021 | 319.3 | 2nd |
| 2020 | 314.0 | 4th |
| 2019 | 313.5 | 2nd |
| 2018 | 319.7 | 1st |
| 2017 | 317.2 | 1st |
| 2016 | 306.8 | 9th |

Interestingly, five LIV Golf players average further off the tee than McIlroy this season. It is actually Joaquin Niemann who leads the way after averaging just over 330 yards.
DeChambeau, Dean Burmester, David Puig and Peter Uihlein complete the top five for this season.
| Position | Player | Average distance (2025) |
| 1 | Joaquin Niemann | 330.7 |
| 2 | Bryson DeChambeau | 328.8 |
| 3 | Dean Burmester | 327.5 |
| 4 | David Puig | 325.5 |
| 5 | Peter Uihlein | 324.2 |
However, McIlroy’s consistency is arguably not spoken about enough. He is someone who has missed one major since the start of the 2009 season. So the fact that he has been one of the longest hitters on tour for such a long time is remarkable.
And judging by Smith’s comments, it is unlikely that McIlroy is expected to drop back anytime soon.
