If you were not already aware, the incoming President of the United States, Donald Trump is quite a big fan of playing golf.

Of course, his association with golf is one of the things Donald Trump is best known for. Trump owns a number of courses around the world; while it appears, at times, that campaigning gets in the way of his golf game.

Trump was involved in one of the biggest videos of all-time when it comes to YouTube golf earlier this year as he took part in a Break 50 challenge with Bryson DeChambeau. Many were surprised by just how consistent Trump was, particularly off the tee. It is impossible to deny that Trump’s golf game is impressive for a 78-year-old.

Cam Smith discusses the experience of playing golf with Donald Trump

And it seems that playing alongside Trump can be intimidating, even for some of the world’s best players. Speaking to Mark Bouris, 2022 Open champion and LIV Golf star Cam Smith opened up on what the experience of playing golf with Trump is actually like, having teed it up with him last year.

“I have played with him before. I played with him last year. I tell you one thing which was nuts. It was the secret service, it was absolutely mental. And he was the former President at that time. The amount of people that were around was insane,” he said.

“This was before he started campaigning and all that stuff. I think that is one thing that is way different. You would never see that in Australia.

“I would say it’s most nervous I have ever been because I felt like I couldn’t do anything wrong. It was almost like I needed to be a robot. But he wasn’t that type of person, he would come up and hug you or give you a high five if you made a birdie. He loves golf. He is like a fiend for golf, he knows every stat. It’s crazy. Some of the stuff he was pulling out, I am a professional golfer, I wouldn’t say I’m a historian of the game but some of the stuff he was pulling out I was like I didn’t know that and I would go and research it and I was like ‘oh that’s right’. He knows everything.”

How Trump’s election could impact talks between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf

Of course, one of the key talking points right now is the potential merger between the PGA Tour and PIF. There has been plenty of rumours, including one which recently suggested that LIV Golf events were set to be played under the PGA Tour banner.

It does appear that some think that Trump’s election could accelerate talks between the two sides. Even Rory McIlroy has expressed a hope that Trump could help bring the game back together.

Obviously, whatever you think of him, his legacy as president is not going to be decided by whether he does help end golf’s civil war. But it is clear that a lot of people involved at the top the game have a lot of time for Trump.
