There might not have ever been a Tiger Woods if it weren’t for Butch Harmon.
The legendary golf coach first worked with Tiger Woods in 1993, during his record-breaking amateur career. Butch Harmon coached Woods during eight of his major championship wins, helping him to become the youngest-ever Masters winner in 1997, before the pair split in 2002.
Woods and Harmon’s split came following years of tension. Woods reportedly felt that Harmon received too much credit for the 15-time major-winner’s success, and the pair had a public feud in 2004 after Harmon criticized Woods’ new swing.
They have since reconciled after years of minimal contact, and that could present a new opportunity for Harmon. There’s a new Woods on the block.

While Charlie Woods is an entirely different prospect from his father, who had the greatest amateur career ever, he does have a distinct advantage over the rest of the amateur field. He can lean on the wisdom of the best who have done it and use all the resources at his disposal.
That could include working with one of the greatest-ever coaches, Harmon, who said he would coach Charlie Woods if Tiger ever asked him to.
Harmon said to SiriusXM, “I don’t know if I’d take it on as a full-time. I’m sure my curiosity would make me damn sure to do it one time just so I could see the kid, because I’ve never seen him play, and he’s got the right last name, so I’d want to take a look at it, that’s for sure.

“Obviously, if he asked me to do it, I would be more than happy to do it. I’ve never had the opportunity to see Charlie play. I was talking to Rickie [Fowler] about it a couple weeks ago, when we were playing down in Florida.
“He played with him, and he says he’s gotten bigger and hits the ball really far now, and he’s going to be a good player. So yeah, I would love to have the opportunity to see it up close and personal. And I’d like Tiger to be there when it happens because we would have some fun with that.
“I’d like to needle Tiger and say, ‘When you were that young, you couldn’t do it like he is doing it.’. And you know what his answer would be to me. I can’t say it on the phone!”
According to Fowler, Charlie Woods might have a successful career ahead of him, and if he can receive coaching from the likes of Harmon, it could take his game to the next level.
How Charlie Woods got on during breakout 2025 season
Charlie Woods took his game to the next level in 2025 during a breakout year in his junior golf career.
He won his first AJGA title, taking a victory at the Team TaylorMade Invitational. Charlie Woods shot 15-under par, winning by three strokes against an elite field of junior amateurs. He set an AJGA Invitational record for total birdies in a tournament, making 26.
Charlie Woods also led The Benjamin School to their second Florida Class 1A State Title in three years, then finished ninth at the Junior PGA Championship.

Starting the year outside of the top 600, Charlie Woods’ win launched him into the top 15 of the AJGA rankings by the end of the year. He was named to the Junior All-America First Team, and he remains one of the highest-profile uncommitted recruits in the country.
