Butch Harmon has revealed how Jason Day almost ruined his career at one stage due to a big fault within his golf swing.

It is almost remarkable to think that it is almost nine years since Jason Day won the only major championship of his career to date, with the Australian reaching number one in the world rankings shortly after.

Had someone been told shortly after Day’s victory at Whistling Straits in 2015 that he would reach the halfway point in 2024 still awaiting his second major title, they may well have not believed you.

But the 36-year-old has had some tough times, going more than five years without a victory on the PGA Tour between 2018 and 2023.

Injuries have more than played their part in Day’s struggles in the last few years, but it would appear that he is starting to turn a corner – with Day registering four top 10 finishes so far this season.

And speaking on On the Road with Iona, Butch Harmon has explained the flaw in Day’s swing which really cost him.

“Perfect example of someone who almost ruined his career by not making a hip turn was Jason Day,” he said.

“Think about his swing, he turned his whole upper body and [his midsection] didn’t move and he had back problems forever. His instructor Chris Como who is a good friend of mine who I really like, has really got him doing a better turn now, taking all the pressure off his back. And now he’s playing good again.”

Australian showing promising signs this season

Day is yet to get back to his very best, having registered just one top 10 in the major championships since the start of the 2021 season. But he is definitely on the right path again, having shot four rounds of par or better at last week’s PGA Championship.

The event at Valhalla really showed how stacked the game currently is, with so many world-class players in contention to win, so it is not going to be easy for Day to get across the line in the big events again.

However, that experience of having won a major previously should stand him in good stead should he find himself in the mix in the future.
