While his final day performance at The Masters left a lot to be desired, Bryson DeChambeau continues to be hugely impressive at the major championships, with the LIV Golf star taking the lead early on on Sunday at Augusta National.
Bryson DeChambeau was one of the standout performers in 2024. While he did not win on LIV Golf, he was superb in the four biggest events of the year.
DeChambeau registered his best finish at The Masters before finishing second at the PGA Championship and then winning the US Open. And he has followed that by getting even closer to winning the green jacket this past week.
Unfortunately for the 31-year-old, he did not have the gears to go to on Sunday to remain in the hunt. By the time he reached the 13th tee, it appeared that DeChambeau’s race was run. A 75 would leave him in fifth spot.
Trevor Immelman thinks Bryson DeChambeau could definitely win a major title this year
Some felt that DeChambeau’s iron play really cost him. He lost around five shots to the field with his approach play over the final three days at The Masters.
| Round | Bryson DeChambeau’s strokes gained approach |
| One | +1.43 |
| Two | -0.78 |
| Three | -1.83 |
| Four | -2.40 |
And speaking to Fried Egg Golf, Trevor Immelman admitted that he was baffled by DeChambeau’s iron game over the week, particularly on Sunday.
He believes that that is all that is separating him from winning a third major title before the turn of the year.
“I’m going to say it again, I’ve already said it, I’ll probably say it again before the end of this pod, he is going to be a problem in the major championships for these other players. He has the mental build-up, the toughness, he has the self-belief, he has incredible talents, he has the crowd on his side for the most part, he creates incredible and amazing energy around him and people are excited to see him and be near him. He’s going to win more majors, there’s no doubt about it in my mind. No doubt about it,” he said.

“I’m following all these players leading up to the tournament. The research starts about a month before, and he had been talking at the tournaments he had been playing, he had been talking about the golf ball and having some issues with balls spinning too much and not being able to control it the way he wanted to control it. And he clearly had The Masters in mind when he was making those comments, trying to make sure that he tightened all that stuff up. But he was able to give himself a chance to win even with absolutely head-scratching distance control issues the whole week at The Masters.
“Even on Sunday, when he was kind of out of it and he gets to 15, hits a great tee shot all the way down there, he’s got nothing in there, and he makes this beautiful swing, and he’s leaning forward posing on it. And we’ve got a great shot of him, and I’m like, ‘well, he likes it’. It didn’t even hit the bank! It flew straight into the water in front of the green. That’s a solid 10 to 12 steps from where he was trying to land it, and it’s like wow, normally at the level these guys are at, which is brilliant, it’s brilliant, for the most part, they are so good that as soon as they strike the ball, they know if it’s good or not, right at impact, guys like that are like, ‘oh yeah, be right, get in, watch this, watch this, it’s going to be close’. Bryson poses on iron shots, they’ll be 20 yards away from where he’s looking distance-wise. That is something that he’s really going to have to tighten up and pay close attention to, and if he finds a solution, he’s going to win a major this year – for sure.”
Bryson DeChambeau’s stats at the 2025 Masters
It will not surprise anyone to know that DeChambeau’s approach game was, by some distance, the worst part of his game over the week at Augusta.
The Crushers captain only lost shots to the field in one category. Meanwhile, no-one had a better record around the green, which is so important at the first major of the year.
| Category | Strokes gained per round |
| Off the tee | 1.10 |
| Tee to green | 1.83 |
| Approach | -0.90 |
| Around the green | 1.63 |
| Putting | 0.60 |
| Total | 2.43 |
You can certainly understand Immelman’s confidence. Four of his eight top 10s in majors have come since the start of 2024. He is becoming a much more well-rounded player.
And with the PGA Championship next up – DeChambeau has finished fourth or better in three of his last four appearances at the event – there is every reason to be optimistic about his chances at Quail Hollow in May.
